The Zombie Queen's Second Chance

25 The Current Situation Inside the Base

Just when she walked into her neighborhood, she noticed one of the students living on the same floor as her going in the direction of their building. He looked pretty tired as well, probably going back from work. Chu Lixue increased her walking tempo a little and soon caught up to him. Just as she was about to speak to him, she heard him mumbling to himself.

"The phone isn't working now either." Hu Wei sighed for a moment and put his smartphone away.

Chu Lixue saw this and said, "Are you trying to call somebody?"

"Oh god!" Hu Wei almost jumped from shock. "Please don't scare me like this in the future. It really took me a lot not to scream, otherwise we'd be screwed right now..."

After the base was established, the new government with military's cooperation created a new set of rules for everyone to follow. One of them was forbidding making laud noises, since zombies are pretty sensitive to them and would gather in the places where they heard them. Even through the base is pretty safe right now, it's still better to play it safe.

"Sorry. My bad." said Chu Lixue, and continued, "So, what's with the phone?"

"Oh, I was trying to see whenever there was a signal. After all, a few bases should already be established, so I thought that maybe they would restore communication, but it seems I was wrong..." explained Hu Wei, slightly disappointed.

"Well, once, during work, our unit's leader talked about the military's plan to restore the communication systems, they should be still working on it. However, he did say something about new SIM cards, and unless the person you want to contact is also from the base, I doubt it would be useful...", Chu Lixue slowly stopped talking noticing Hu Wei's initial excitement turning into disappointment.

"I was trying to check on my parents and my brother. My home is in S City, while my brother was working in F City for the last couple of months before the Apocalypse... I called home right after the Apocalypse started but no one answered…"

Together with Sister Ren and Chubby they were afraid of the Apocalypse and hid outside of school right after it started. They tried calling home right after, but none of them had any luck...

'Who knows if they are even still alive? Perhaps they turned into zombies right at the beginning. Or maybe they were killed after...'

Seeing that Hu Wei was spacing out, and his face looked slightly pale, Chu Lixue comforted him a little.

"Okay, if they turned into zombies at the beginning than that's it. But what if they didn't and decided to hide somewhere? Military regiments are practically in every province now. Your family lived in pretty big cities, so it's possible that they are now safe inside secure zones." Chu Lixue said, stopping his mind from going astray.

"Right! Which province doesn't have a garrison? Just look at A City's military, I heard that local garrison troops reacted promptly, and the troops responded swiftly rescuing survivors and destroying zombies. Week after the Apocalypse and they already had an initial base created."

"Yep, it's not like A City is the only safe place in the world right now. My guess is that there should be plenty of places with restored order stretched through the country."

Chu Lixue's words loosened the student's tense nerves. Though many people's friends and relatives were facing zombies, if they had some luck, they should be able to survive.

The future was bright now that they had entered the safe zone and had protection. All districts from the base had walls and defensive structures built with the army supervising them. After registering personal information, all that people needed to do was to work in various types of jobs. While they weren't really the same types of assignments as most people had before the Apocalypse, their lives currently were truly peaceful.

In fact, the initial wall was made mainly by military personnel, after all where would they have people to contact about work? Only after people started evolving and earth ability came up the military could take a step back and rely on other people. On the other hand, those with prior construction experience could do some technical work now.

Aside from ability users, the other important group for the base would be young people in the prime of their lives, for example Hu Wei and the other students. While most of them wouldn't have much experience, they could still learn a lot and their bodies were in good conditions. Also, which young person now didn't know how to use electronics? Once the base restored signal, there would also be more assignments released that concerned work needing technical knowledge of computers and electronical equipment in general.

Ability users also had their own work cut out for them. These with earth elemental abilities would help building structures, these with water abilities could help with purifying the base's water sources. The military also started to research the plant ability's uses on their crops.

Oh, and there also were these with offensive abilities. Obviously, they were the group most recognized by military, and usually would receive special treatment in hopes of being recruited. After all, zombies would continue to grow in power. Move forward a few months and perhaps weapons used by normal soldiers wouldn't be useful anymore. It's better to be prepared for the future.
