At this time, a little girl about the same height as Mo Yan but much stouter ran in, “Auntie, you’re here. Do the donkey and the cart at the door belong to you?”

“Lan’er, you’re back? Yes, they’re mine.”

Mo Yan got up and greeted her cousin, who casually threw her schoolbag on the ground and ran over to Mo Yan, “Yan’er, you’ve grown so tall, and your clothes look so pretty!”

What Lianglan was wearing was similar to what Mo Yan used to wear. She was wearing linen clothes, and had her hair in twin buns, but had no hair accessories. She had tied her hair with two cloth strips. She had a round face and was a bit chubby, but her facial features resembled her father’s, so she looked very cute.

“Lan’er, are there many girls in your school?” Mo Yan asked.

“Not many, just the three.”

“Is your teacher good?”

Lianglan’s face, which was still bright just then, immediately fell, “He’s going to bore him to sleep one of these days, what do you think? I’ll stop going when the harvest begins.”

“Then what are you going to do?”

Lianglan raised her head slightly, and pretended to be serious, “I’m going to find a man to marry, have children, and live out the rest of my days!”

“How old are you again? You already want to get married?”

“Then what should I do? Do I just stay in the family’s small oil workshop and smell of oil all day long?”

Mo Yan’s aunt came back after harvesting the shallots and threw them in the courtyard to clean later. Then, someone shouted in the front yard, “I’d like some sesame oil!”
Auntie gave Lianglan a nudge and told her to go over. Lianglan immediately ran to the backroom, and Mo Yan followed to watch.

A peasant woman in her thirties entered the backroom with a small clay pot in her hand.

“How much?” Lianglan asked.

“Five dollars worth!”

Lianglan took the clay jar and reached out to open the lid of one of the oil drums. Then, she reached into the oil drum with an oil handle to mix the sesame oil, and slowly poured it into the clay jar.

She did it very proficiently, like she was experienced.

The woman left with a jar of sesame oil in her hand. Mo Yan asked again, “Lan’er, do you want to work? I have an acquaintance who opened a workshop and firm in Qianshui City. You can work in the workshop or sell commodities.”

“What do you sell in the store?” Lianglan asked with a smile on her face, looking very cute.

“All sorts, it’s on the main road and called Sanjiang Commercial Firm. It’s easy to find, so you can go and have a look.”

“Sure!”

The two of them went back to the living room. Qiu Jinhua’s noodles have already been made, and had already been served in individual bowls.

Among the gifts Ms. Liang brought was a roast chicken. She had put it on a plate on the table.

Mo Yan’s aunt complained repeatedly, “We’re all from the same family, sister, why are you being so polite? Why did you buy these?”

“It’s different now, since my family’s life is better, how can I come over empty-handed ?”

Qiu Shi asked, “Did brother-in-law get promoted and return with a lot of money?”

Ms. Liang still had a smile on her face when she replied with a faint sigh, “The money was all earned by the children. He and I have already divorced.”

When he heard the word ‘divorce’, Mo Yan’s uncle almost dropped his bowl of noodles, “Divorce?! Why didn’t you tell me about this! People will think there’s no one in your natal family, or you feel ashamed to have me as your younger brother!” Mo Yan’s aunt echoed that sentiment, saying Ms. Liang didn’t treat them as family.

“I didn’t want to trouble you. Besides, they can’t bully me. Aren’t we living a good life now?”

“Where’s Mo Zenian? I’ll have to go to Yi City, I need to have words with him.”

“There’s no need, he’s no longer in Yi City. I don’t know where he is now.”

“He’s not even coming back for his daughter’s marriage?”

“I have full custody of the children. It’s a good thing he’s not coming back.”

Mo Yan knew her mother didn’t want to talk about this further with her natal family, so urged, “Hurry up and eat the noodles! Otherwise, it will be all soggy.”

Everyone started to eat without ceremony.

When the meatless broth, the green shallots, the golden eggs, and the white noodles are mixed together, it looked delicious.

Mo Yan took a sip of the broth, and it was very light, not greasy at all, which she liked. Her appetite wasn’t as good as Lianglan’s, so she only had half a bowl, while Lianglan finished an entire bowl with gusto. Qiu Shi watched his daughter polish off the noodles with a gratified smile on his face, “She can only grow taller and have a healthy body if she eats more.”

After dinner, Mo Yan’s aunt refused everyone’s help and washed up by herself, while Lianglan took Mo Yan to her room to play.

The furnture in Mo Yan’s uncle’s house was very simple, but her cousin lived a carefree and happy life in this house, which made her very envious.

She regretted not giving her little cousin a present. But then, Mo Yan thought, When Sis gets married, they’d all go anyways, it’d be the same to give one then.

“Lan’er, my sister will get married on the 18th and the dowries will be exchanged on the 16th. You should go. You’re our only relatives left.”

“If cousin Mo Ling is getting married, of course we’ll go, don’t worry!”

Ms. Liang missed Mo Feng, and wanted to go back by the afternoon.

Qiu Jinhua handed a jar of sesame oil to Ms. Liang, while Qiu Shi went to help hitch the donkey back to the carriage. Mo Yan and Ms. Liang sat inside, while Mo Ling drove.

Mo Yan couldn’t help but say, “Uncle really loves Cousin Lan’er.”

Ms. Liang replied proudly, complimenting her natal family, “She’s the youngest! Which family doesn’t cherish their youngest child?”

Mo Yan turned to look at her, and asked her with her gaze, “How about our family?”

In order to hide her embarrassment, Ms. Liang messed with her hair, “If it wasn’t for the nonsense of that fortune teller, maybe…”

“Mo Zenian was just that kind of person, what does it have to do with a fortune teller?”

Ms. Liang stopped talking, and just stared at the wheat fields by the road in a daze. After a long time, she said, “What happened to our wheat field?”

Mo Ling whipped the donkey lightly, which quickened its pace, and the carriage rocked rhythmically along.

“Mom, those two acres of land is no longer ours, don’t look at it, just ignore it.”

“But we plowed the land and sowed the seeds already.”

“Forget it, I don’t want to interact with those people at all if possible.”

The donkey had just arrived at the well. Before it had stopped, Ms. Liang had gotten out of the carriage impatiently, and headed home with the small clay pot of oil in her hand.

Mo Ling unhooked the donkey from the carriage, obscuring it with a few bundles of sorghum poles before leading the donkey home.

Because the gate of their house wasn’t wide enough for carriages to enter, it had to be temporarily placed outside the courtyard. Fortunately, the public security in the village was good, and no one would steal it.

After entering the yard, Mo Ling tied the donkey to a tree, “Mother, we have to build a barn quickly. If it rains, we can’t lead the donkey to the living room!”

Mo Feng came out of his room when he heard that, “How is this crippled donkey worth building a barn for? Get rid of it as soon as possible, I’m getting annoyed just seeing it.”
