Mo Feng looked into the kitchen. Knowing he couldn’t win in an argument against his sisters, he didn’t go in, but Mo Yan called him back.

“Mo Feng, stop!”

Mo Feng stopped and looked at her, not knowing what she was going to do. She wouldn’t be up to anything good anyways.

“What are you up to?”

“If you promise not to talk to Xiuying again, I promise you that I’ll buy you a better carriage and horse than Mo Ling.”

Mo Feng was happy at first, but then turned depressed, “But Xiuying and I have made an agreement, and she’s the only one I’ll marry. How can a man break his promise?”

Mo Yan continued, “If you don’t talk to her anymore, I guarantee that you won’t have to worry about food or clothing for the rest of your life. If you insist on marrying her, then your affairs will have nothing to do with me from now on.”

“You promised to help me marry her.”

“But I don’t want to hurt you!”

Just thinking about living under the same roof as someone like Xiuying made Mu Yan feel sick. I don’t know what kind of tricks she used on Mo Feng to make him so infatuated.

Even though they all knew about the horse, Mo Yan still didn’t take it home. She was afraid they would like it the more they looked at it, and wouldn’t be able to send it away as part of Mo Ling’s dowry.

It was agreed that they would go to Mo Yan’s uncle’s house tomorrow, and Ms. Liang had already bought gifts from the market, and asked Mr. Cao to help write an wedding invitation.

Mo Feng was supposed to drive the carriage, but he thought the donkey was too ugly, and kept complaining, “We have a good horse we’re not using, but we’ve driving this lame donkey? I’m not going.”

Mo Ling led the donkey to the cart, “If you aren’t going, I will!”

The three of them got into the carriage and left the village. Mo Yan’s uncle lived in Liu Family Manor, which was three miles away. They would be there soon.

The carriage was parked outside the gate of her uncle’s house. Mo Ling tied the donkey to the willow tree at the gate, while Ms. Liang and Mo Yan went in first.

Her uncle’s house is very large, with six rooms, a backroom and a storage warehouse. There was a strong smell of soybean oil coming from the kitchen, but it was smell of stale old oil.

Ms. Liang called “Qiu Shi”, and a man in his late forties came out from the backroom. When he saw her, he immediately called her ‘sister’ with a smile on his face. This was Mo Yan’s uncle.

Qiu Shi looked very similar to Mo Feng, with fair skin and handsome facial features. When he saw Mo Yan, he said dotingly, ” I haven’t seen Yan’er in two years, and she’s already so big!”

Immediately afterwards, a woman came out from the backroom as well. She looked older than Ms. Liang, with extremely plain facial features. She had a chubby face with a few pockmarks, meat bun eyes, a bulbous nose, and a catfish mouth. It was hard to compliment her looks.

The woman bowed to Ms. Liang and called her ‘sister’, and Ms. smiled and called “Jinhua”.
This woman actually had such a nice name? So this was her aunt, Qiu Jinhua.

Ms. Liang turned to Mo Yan and said, “You’re normally so talkative, but during situations like these, you become mute.”

Mo Yan bowed down and greeted her uncle and aunt. Mo Ling had also tied up the donkey and had entered the house with the gifts.

Mo Yan’s aunt and uncle let them into the living room, and brought out fried soybeans for them as snacks. Mo Yan chewed on a fried soybean. It was crispy and fragrant, but a little tough.

Qiu Shi, Mo Yan’s uncle asked, “Sister, you’re normally so busy you don’t even come over on holidays. What’s the special occasion?”

Ms. Liang took out the wedding invitation and handed it over, “My Mo Ling is getting married, so I wanted to announce the good news.”

Qiu Shi took the wedding invitation and opened it to have a look, “Xiahe Village, that’s quite far away. I haven’t heard you mention Mo Ling was marrying that far away before!”

“That’s just a coincidence. It’s a long story, but trust me, it’s nothing to be worried about.”

At this moment, Mo Yan’s donkey brayed from outside the courtyard, and sounded a bit miserable. Mo Ling stood up and ran out. Her uncle asked her what was wrong, and she just replied “our donkey” and ran out. Qiu Shi followed her.

Mo Ling had just stepped out when she backed away with a blushing face. Her uncle asked, “What’s wrong?”

Mo Ling just continued to blush and didn’t speak. Qiu Shi leaned over to look outside, scolded the donkey for being a “beast”, then ran out.

All Mo Yan could hear was thumping, snorting, and howling.

Ms. Liang and Qiu Jinhua also ran out to watch, but Mo Ling blocked the door, “Don’t go.”

Qiu Jinhua asked,”Why do I hear two donkeys outside?”

Ms. Liang pulled Mo Ling aside and went out to take a look, only to see her younger brother leading a donkey to a courtyard across the street, yelling, “Why didn’t you tie your donkey up? It ran out again!”

A man came out of the courtyard and led the donkey in. Qiu Shi turned around and came back, looking at Ms. Liang and her donkey and said, “Your donkey is young anymore. If you could get a foal, it wouldn’t be a bad thing.”

Ms. Liang was overjoyed when she heard this, “Our old donkey can still give birth?”

“It’s definitely possible, you should pay more attention when you go back!”

If this old donkey could give birth to a foal, it’d be a great thing!

They went back inside the house, and Mo Yan looked into the backroom. Her aunt smiled and said, “Did you smell the oil dums? That’s my family’s oil workshop, go in and have a look!”

Mo Yan stepped into the backroom. Inside was a homemade oil press, and there were several oil barrels by the wall. Looking up, there was another door on the other side of the room.

“Auntie, why does this room have two doors?”

She replied, “This is the in-between room, and there’s a courtyard in front of it. It used to belong to my natal family. I was an only daughter, so the yard also belongs to us.”

Mo Yan opened the door, and that courtyard was even bigger than the previous one. Looking beyond the courtyard wall, she could see fields in the distance.

There were two vegetable fields beside the courtyard, and on the base of the courtyard wall on both sides of the room’s entrance, there were flowerbeds with hollyhocks planted in them. Big green leaves had already grown, but they hadn’t bloomed yet.

“This is something Lan’er is just playing with.”

Fortunately, Mo Yan had checked with Mo Ling before coming here. Her uncle’s youngest daughter is Qiu Lianglan, and was only one year older than Mo Yan.

“Where’s Sister Lan’er?”

“She’s gone to school, and should be back any second.”

It turns out that her cousin could go to school. Just because of this, Mo Yan’s impression of her aunt had improved a thousandfold.

Her eldest male cousin Liang Xiao’s family of three had gone to his father-in-law’s house today, and her eldest female cousin Liang Ju married last year. As her second male cousin Liang Di had gone out to work and wouldn’t be back tonight, Mo Yan could only see her little cousin Liang Lan today.

It was almost noon, and Qiu Jinhua went to make lunch, “Sister, let’s eat noodles! The shallots I planted have grown, so let’s braise the noodles with shallots and eggs.” As she said that, she scooped white flour and put them in the mixing basin, and asked Liang to mix the noodles. She went to the front yard to cut shallots, and Mo Ling went to the kitchen to light a fire.

Mo Yan sat on the side and watched Ms. Liang, “Mother, I never knew shallots can also be braised!”

“And eggs, too! Most people can’t afford to have shallots normally.”

Her uncle came out from the backroom, “Yan’er has never eaten braised noodles with shallots and eggs. It’s delicious! You have to try it.”
