The Zombie Queen's Second Chance

Lin Qiao sat down next to Zhao Yun and leaned her head on his shoulder.

"So, since we're left alone now, should we do something to stay awake?"

"I don't think so. It's not like we can take out a deck of cards out of nowhere and play with them right now, can't we?" Hu Wei asked.

Zhao Yun glanced at him for a moment. "It's alright. Let's just talk with each other to pass some time..."

"So, any ideas what we should talk about?"

"Anybody?"

"Maybe we should talk about what we were doing before the Apocalypse? It should take some time..."

Seeing that nobody had a better idea, Lin Qiao decided to talk first. "Before the Apocalypse hit, I was a simple university student. My parents died when I was still young and later my grandmother took care of me."

Trying to control her negative emotions, Lin Qiao continued, "She died during the time I was on my 3rd year in high school. After that I had to compromise between a work to have how to pay my bills and going to school and later university..."

Zhao Yun hugged her tightly. "It's alright, you don't need to talk more if you don't want to."

Soon, silence fell down upon them.

"I think I had a pretty normal childhood. My parents could still be alive somewhere in the Apocalypse if our family had luck."

Hu Wei drunk some water and began talking again, "We were a pretty normal family. We didn't have much money, and my mother was pretty sickly, so I couldn't really afford going to a prestigious university. After thinking about our situation with my parents, we decided that I would attend University of Economics in C County. I was on my 2nd year when the Apocalypse hit. Later on, I grouped up with fatty and Sister Ren and we somehow managed to get to A City's base. The rest you guys should already know."

"I don't really have a fancy story or anything. I was an orphan from my early years, so after finishing high school I straight away joined the military. After a few years I became a captain of a small unit, but because of some misunderstandings and different conception as to how to handle things I left the military after the Apocalypse."

Zhao Yun said, and looking at Lin Qiao he curved his lips and continued.

"Shortly after that I have awaken my abilities. Since I didn't have anything to do, I simply picked up a task that I could do with my ability and that's pretty much it. I met Qiao Qiao and Chu Lixue there, and the rest is recent history..."

Lin Qiao blushed slightly and changed the topic, trying to cover up her embarrassment.

"Stop talking about me!"

"Anyway, how did you guys find out that you became ability users?"

Hu Wei said, "I had a pretty high fever that day. After waking up, I could feel some energy going through my body. It took me a few days to figure out that I've got an ability. When I touched some metal by an accident I felt an affinity with it, and after some tries here and there, I learned how to control it."

"Well, I'm not really sure. After leaving the military I felt pretty bad, and when I woke up the next day and went outside, I could feel some connection with the soil under my feet. I guess that was enough."

"I agree. Almost the same thing happened to me, I think overall Earth ability users have it the easiest to recognize their abilities. After all, all we need to do is to go outside and we will already know what it is." Lin Qiao said, her voice weirdly proud.

"I wonder why we even got our abilities..."

"Yeah, I don't think anybody can answer that question for now."

"Maybe in the future some scientists will figure it out."

Not far away from Chu Lixue's group's two trucks, inside a caravan, a group of people could be seen talking.

Sitting on a couch was a fat man, with an arrogant face, probably in his middle forties.

"Boss, it seems that they split up."

"Split up, huh? How many of them are left?", the fat man asked.

"3 of them are standing on watch outside. 2 man and 1 woman." A skinny man said.

Another man sitting on a chair added, "Is the woman pretty? We could take her as well if her face is nice..."

"How am I supposed to know? It's too dark you idiot..."

"What did you say? Who's the idiot?!"

"Of course it's you--"

The fat man almost exploded in anger. "Shut up you two! Both of you are stupid as hell."

"One of you better go and observe if they have any weapons. If they don't, we can try to take them out in the middle of the night."

"Boss, why do we have to go through the trouble? Aren't they just a bunch of low-life's trying to get into the base?"

"You truly are an idiot! What normal person can get a military truck, two of them to be exact. Obviously, they are a group that came back from scavenging. Their trucks should be full of goods that we can grab! And if the women are nice, we can take them as an additional bonus for ourselves."
