The Zombie Queen's Second Chance

27 Zombies Began to Evolve

The building process started on 8th March. By the end of the month, workers could be seen already packing up. The wall was unexpectedly built in one month, a speed that wouldn't be possible even before the Apocalypse.

Using Earth ability users for construction was truly effective.

The trench outside the wall was dug deep, the walls around the new Central District were built heavily fortified and thickened. Soon, the walls around other districts would be reinforced as well. While first humans were slowly on the verge of breaking through with their abilities to Tier 2, it was possible that the zombies could join this rank as well. It was better to prepare for that in advance.

By this point the number of residents in the security zone had reached over 50 000 people! With such a large number of people, the labor force naturally increased a lot.

In addition to the original army troops, thanks to the constant reclaiming of new districts, the base still didn't reach its members limit. Right now, as long as they had enough food, they could probably accept another 10 000 or 20 000 people.

Since the population had reached a certain level, the system of home distribution was changed as well. Before, since the base had a limited amount of space, only these with enough money could afford getting a home. Now however, with the constant reclaiming of more and more buildings, living space was granted to pretty much everyone. While the new rooms weren't perfect, and often looked pretty crude, at the very least people had a roof above their heads.

Several buildings had been emptied and new arrivals were collectively placed in the empty halls. This didn't mean however, that it wasn't possible to get a better place for yourself. Residential blocks inside the military district were now freely distributed to ability users. About 25% of the Residential District's buildings, that were closest to the Military District, are still for sale or rent. As long as one had enough food stamps, crystal nucleuses or just food, they could get themselves an apartment inside one of them.

Those who were rescued before, such as Chu Lixue and the others, would also need to pay some money of their choice after some time to keep their homes. One, because the government also needed resources. And two, because it was a good way to keeping track of people. After all, with groups of people coming out of the base and hunting for zombies, who knows how many of them return. If after some time one didn't pay their new rent, they could rent their apartments again.

However, if one wanted to move apartments? It would be the same as others and required food or crystal nucleuses.

After the wall was completed, the Central District needed to be rebuilt. After all, before the Apocalypse, it was mostly used for commerce. Some building could be changed into residential ones, but other would need to be completely rebuilt.

Thus, aside from the usual tasks of working as labor force for the construction, there were also the inevitable tasks of going out to collect supplies and rescue other people doing the same job that got cornered by zombies. They couldn't simply abandon them, after all. Not only were most of them ability users, but nobody would want to go outside if at the very least they couldn't expect any help. They could live a nice life inside the base, so why would they bother, right?

The military had many search and rescue staff sent out but it was not enough for the situation in the urban area. All were stretched thin with later security zone construction and other objectives.

...

A City, on Military District's main road.

"What is this thing?", asked a random man, looking at the trucks moving through the road.

A few people around him heard what he said and looked at the moving convoy. At the back of the trucks a few strangely shaped carcasses could be seen, the remains of a its form twisted so much, that little of its original appearance remained.

"These are some of the evolved zombies. I heard that previously a group encountered one of these things, none of them survived."

"Just one of them!? A ten people team completely wiped out by one zombie!?"

"Yes, it happened suddenly, the monster was mixed in with normal zombies that they usually killed, so by the time they noticed something was wrong…"

"…Are these the only ones? Or are there more of them? Scary…"

"In fact, everybody seems to have forgotten about it, but the military did say before that zombies had the possibility to evolve as well. The zombie was stronger than a normal one, and faster too."

"At present…god knows how much of them already evolved..."

There was silence and no one spoke for a while. Everyone around couldn't help but be a little happy from their comrade's tragedy. After all, most of them go out as well to collect resources. Each of them, if unprepared, could end up the same way.

"Well, let the scientists check to see what exactly is happening with the zombies. Let's just hope that they can't continue to evolve, or we will really be in trouble..."

"That's true." People around couldn't help but to convey their agreement. With the amount of zombies, it was hard to push them away already. If they could continue to evolve, one didn't know how much more people would need to die in order to let people inside the base to survive.
