The Zombie Queen's Second Chance

22 Meeting in the Corridor

Mu Ruqin nodded and continued drinking soup. Lucky was laying down next to the bedside table and showing off his fluffy stomach, successfully taking the attention of Chu Lili.

Chu Lixue set the alarm, made sure everything was okay inside her growing room, and put her daughter to bed, tucking her in. She turned off the lights early to rest and slept until dawn. It was early in the morning, still dark, when she woke up.

The military managed to clean out the Central district 2 days ago. She's been notified that her team can start working on defensive structures in the new district starting today.

She stood up and went to the kitchen to prepare food for today. She made food for herself and Lili, that they could eat during work. While she gradually accepted Mu Ruqin and started to trust her, her daughter still preferred to stick close to her. She also prepared everything needed to be used and eaten by Mu Ruqin, and left it at the bedside table. Chu Lixue also filled up the bowls of Lucky with water and some dog food. While some extremely hungry people would probably eat dog food, it still wasn't to the point of having no supply. Then she checked the status of the crops in their home. Chu Lixue woke up her daughter, helped her get cleaned and dressed, took her backpack and bat, and was ready to leave for work.

It seems like she would meet her new neighbors sooner than she thought. The students also seemed to be in ready gear early in the morning, perhaps going to work as well.

Chu Lixue opened her front door at the same time as the flat opposite to her own apartment.

"Ah, you're from 1801, right? We moved in here yesterday." The Chubby man enthusiastically greeted Chu Lixue and her daughter.

While they were a little surprised at seeing a little girl coming out as well, they were still relieved seeing a person in similar age to them, without any visible signs of wickedness.

"Yes, we're from 1801. Are you guys going to work?"

"Yeah, not working is not good. Yesterday someone said that everyone on base should do some work. Otherwise, they plan to start fining points if one does not contribute to the base after a certain period of time!" The other man said.

The woman with surname Ren asked, "Are you living on your own? Have you been here for long?"

"My home is here, moved in some time after the Apocalypse with my daughter. What about you guys? Did you just join the base?"

"We are from the University of Economics in C County. We were classmates before the Apocalypse..."

"C County? That's quite a distance from here."

The students sighed in response to Chu Lixue's comment. The woman in the middle remarked.

"We actually only met each other the day after the Apocalypse. Anyway, even though C County is not as populated as large cities, there were still a lot of students. It was too dangerous to just stay there and wait. Instead we took a break, went to a supermarket and got some food, found an abandoned house and waited for about a month."

Chu Lixue froze in surprise. "Month? Didn't you encounter any zombies?"

"The house was pretty sturdy, so the zombies didn't break in. After waiting for a month, we realized that nobody would come and help us there. When we went out for some more food, we met another group of survivors and heard from them about A City's base. It took us another month to get here, it was a scary time...", said the Chubby guy.

Chu Lixue looked at them and couldn't help but be surprised. Even though they didn't go into details, there was a massive number of zombies outside. To make it safely into the base, they either needed strong weapons or their abilities should be of the offensive type.

"Why would you choose to live on such a high floor? It's inconvenient to move up or down. Usually people wouldn't want to live on the 18th floor…"

The three looked at each other, it seemed that Chu Lixue was not a bad person. She already had a room and would find out sooner or later so one of then whispered, "Actually, we just wanted a room with good natural lighting. We might not know much, but at the very least living so high, we should be able to get some energy from the rays of sunlight."

The one surnamed Ren said. "Now the whole world is crawling with zombies, the size of human living space will certainly shrink, resources unusable! In the future, most energy should be coming from generators using nature as their ingredients. So solar panels, wind turbines and so on..."

"Right, you two live on your own?" Asked the chubby man. He couldn't help but think that perhaps aside from the mother-and-daughter duo there would be another, good looking woman living there. As to why he thought that, probably only he knows the answer to that.

"With my sister." Chu Lixue smiled, lying through her teeth and explained seeing their puzzled faces. "My parents died before the Apocalypse, so me and my sister were left alone. My sister went out for work a few days ago and fell from the stairs, injuring her leg. She can't move from bed yet, so she's currently staying home lazing around."

"Oh, is her leg alright?", asked the Chubby man, a glimmer of excitement could be seen in his eyes.

"Nothing much, a bit of fracture, she should be fine in two days. No dislocation occurred so she just needs to rest properly." Chu Lixue explained, seeing the man's genuine concern.

There was no need to reveal that Mu Ruqin had actually been attacked and injured, and that she was just a bystander that saved her. After all, the group who had tried to kill Mu Ruqin was still probably in the area.
