Over the course of the next few days, both of them slowly began to open up to each other and truly resemble a mother and daughter pair.

What's more, even though Chu Lixue tried to strengthen her door with wood that she's recently bought, it still wasn't as strong as a normal anti-theft door. Because of that, she didn't feel safe leaving her new daughter alone inside the house. After some asking and pleading to her superior from military, she was finally allowed to take her daughter with her.

Next Friday, when the pair was going home, they noticed that the elevator inside their building didn't have any power.

"Blackout? It had finally occurred?"

Chu Lixue was surprised then wryly smiled, as she didn't know if she should be happy or cry. If they had been inside the elevator when the power was cut, they would have been stuck in the middle for god knows how long.

While the base didn't provide free energy for everyone, at the very least, people living inside the military district could use it for a few hours every day. Usually the power was on in the morning, between 6 am and 9 am, and later in the evening, between 4 pm and 8 pm.

Although Chu Lixue had gone through the building multiple times, she remained cautious and vigilant this time. While the building was sturdy, the construction company has been stingy on lightbulbs, as it was pretty dark on the stairs. Chu Lixue picked out her baseball bat that she has bought after the last incident, picked her daughter in the other hand and made her way up.

The mother and daughter pair cautiously ascended one floor at a time, then yanked back a little when they reached the 14th floor. There was someone there!

A woman was lying on the stairs in front of them, she seemed to have fainted while climbing. From behind, it seemed like the woman was dead, with her body covered in blood.

"Mommy, is this big sister alright?", asked Chu Lili.

Chu Lixue didn't answer. She held her bat harder, slowly approached and poked the woman's back. Although her bat was deadly, it was only lethal when swung. As long as she didn't use any strength, it should not hurt anyone.

Chu Lixue prodded her twice, receiving no reaction whatsoever. She raised an eyebrow and guessed, that from the injuries on her body, the woman had died due to means unrelated to zombies. She paused then took two steps forward, bat raised, intending to move around her, when suddenly the woman groaned.

She was alive! Chu Lixue felt a little conflicted. She was alive and not a zombie which was good, but a living person also caused problems. She could still see her injuries, since they were human made, wouldn't they be in danger if they helped her?

Wondering, Chu Lixue tried to turn the girl over using her bat. The woman suddenly opened her eyes and after getting out of a confused state, she remembered what had happened yesterday. The girl's eyes flashed and a flame could be seen increasing on her hand.

Fire ability? The thought flashed through Chu Lixue's mind.

"Mommy, can we help her?" Chu Lili quietly asked, after they backtracked a little.

The woman propped herself up and narrowed her eyes. She was obviously not relaxed and held a hand to her chest, perhaps an injury with internal bleeding not from zombies. If she had seen any ill intent from them, she would probably already use her fire to burn them.

When the girl scrunched up her eyes, and finally could see the appearance of the people in front of her, she already passed out, only managing to say out, with a disbelieving voice, "Sister-in-law...?"

Chu Lixue's heart sank as she took in the girl's appearance, her current state was likely caused by former companions. Originally, Chu Lixue wanted to ignore her and simply move towards their home, but her daughter had a different idea, "Mommy, please save big sister! She looks like a nice person; you can't leave her alone!"

"And why would we help her, Lili? She's not our problem, we don't even know her name...", Chu Lixue's voice slowly grew quieter, as she could see tears growing inside her daughter's eyes.

"Ugh, fine. But only this time, we can't help every person that is injured"

"Yay, I love you mommy!", shouted happily Chu Lili.

Looking at her daughter, Chu Lixue could only sigh helplessly to herself. She let her go upstairs on her own, while she herself dragged the unconscious woman up. Truly a hard and ungrateful job.

During this time, she could also finally look at the girl. She looked pretty young, probably being around 20 years old. Had blonde hair, green eyes, a sharp chin, and aside from the blood on them, her clothes looked pretty clean. Chu Lixue wouldn't be surprised if the woman turned out to be a powerful person inside the base's military or government.

After managing to drag her home, Chu Lixue took out a spare bedding, and after checking her injuries, cleaning them and changing her clothes to a pair of her own, she put her to sleep.

Since it was a tiring day for all of them, Chu Lixue didn't have much more stamina. Taking her already asleep daughter, she told Lucky to watch the woman near them, went to bed and slowly her mind begun to drift apart.
