The Zombie Queen's Second Chance

Even after coming home, Chu Lixue still couldn't get herself out of her trance.

"Just what did I think I was doing...", mutterings similar to that one could be heard from time to time.

Only when she has left the hospital, it hit her, that the girl didn't have anything to do with her. However, thinking about it, she has already said that she would adopt her. It's not like she can just throw her away and get it done, right?

If she truly did, then all her effort would be useless. She might as well hit her head on the wall going by that logic.

After thinking about it for some time, Chu Lixue slowly accepted the idea of becoming a mother. Her now daughter, even though dirty and thin, was nonetheless pretty cute. She didn't look older than 8 years old, and adding that to the fact that she was able to survive until now, it seems she shouldn't be too spoiled or stupid.

Her water ability would be useful as well. Chu Lixue originally wanted to use water from the base, but that has its limits. And even if it didn't, water created by a water ability user should be of better quality and purer, right? It could be used not only for washing themselves, but also for watering her plants.

The biggest straw that turned around Chu Lixue's mind, and made her accept the girl, was the fact that she was currently a zombie. Even if she managed to fall in love one day, with the Apocalypse ongoing, it would be very hard to give birth to a child. And ignoring that, Chu Lixue had no idea if she was even able to get pregnant with her current body.

Chu Lixue was a pretty stubborn person. Once she decided something, she would act on it. Obviously, she couldn't tell if the little girl would want her to become her family, but most likely she wouldn't object to it.

"Sleep as long as you need, you've tired yourself out too much...", she said, sitting down on the bed's edge and touching her forehead.

Maybe somehow the little girl managed to hear these words, since even hours later, when night was descending, she was still comfortably sleeping. Seeing that she probably wouldn't wake up today, Chu Lixue moved her to the left side of the bed and lied next to her.

Next morning, after waking up and preparing herself for work, the child still didn't show any signs of waking up. Having no other possibility, she simply left her a note, told Lucky to watch the house, and left.

Work these days was getting more comfortable. Since they finished reclaiming the residential district, the military decided to strengthen the barriers around the original district of the base.

During last month, she and the original group became better acquaintances. Aside from the middle-aged Joe Chang, who still was a little grumpy, the rest of them were pretty friendly with each other.

Chu Lixue herself was closest with Lin Qiao, who aside from being a little foolish was a pretty good friend. After that, she was pretty close with Zhao Yun. While they didn't have any interactions aside from work, she still felt that he was trustworthy.

During the last month more people discovered their abilities, so their original group went up from 4 people to 7, but she wasn't close with the new members. They always looked at them as if they were much better, and it was simply hard to be comfortable with people like that. Right now, Chu Lixue didn't even remember their names.

Work still took them 10 hours a day, but they moved the time it begun to 8 am. So, by the time she came home, it was already close to 7 pm.

After being welcomed by Lucky, she went inside the room to check on the little girl. Seeing that the quilt trembled slightly right after she went in, Chu Lixue already knew that she was awake.

Sighing a bit, she went to the bed and sat down next to the girl.

"Don't be scared, I'm not going to hurt you. Can you open your beautiful eyes and let me take a look at them?"

The little girl hesitated a little, but not feeling any hostile intent, she finally opened them and looked at Chu Lixue, while her eyes fully betrayed her emotions. She looked both scared and hurt.

Seeing this, Chu Lixue simply took her into her arms and hugged her strongly. Perhaps the girl felt that she was safe in that moment, but she couldn't help but cry.

"It's fine, cry if you need to. I won't allow anybody to hurt you anymore."

After some time, when the little girl's emotions stabilized a bit, they finally could talk about their future. When the girl was asked for her family, seeing that she didn't want to talk about them, Chu Lixue smartly decided to ignore that topic for now and asked her if she wanted to stay with her.

Feeling the child in her chest nodding lightly, Chu Lixue was satisfied.

"Alright, from today on you will be my daughter. Right, after all that talk, I forgot to ask your name...?"

"Lili...", the girl whispered, with a cute voice, that was barely hearable.

"Great. So, your name will be Chu Lili from now on.", Chu Lixue said seriously, not noticing the slight smile that crept onto her own face.
