Astraea

Chapter 23:Rules

"Uncle, we got Torin Wald and on our way to Iris." Briony takes the initiative to call and report to their Uncle since they were now working as a team under him.

If it was before they'll just have to take the fugitive to the bondsmen that hire them, and do some paperwork then wait for the bondsmen to transfer their payment to their bank account.

But now that they are working with their Uncle, they will report to him now and then. Their Uncle will do all the negotiation and paperwork with the bondsmen while they do the hunt and arrest.

"Okay, I'll meet you at Iris. I'll do the paperwork ahead of time." Lorcan replied.

Then after a while, he asks, "Is he injured?"

As a bounty hunter, there are some rules that they have to abide by, rules that the bondsmen formulated and are recognized by law enforcement.

They can use any techniques they are comfortable in hunting and arresting fugitives as long as they will be delivered to the bondsmen safe and unharmed.

It may seem impossible to Bell not to injure her target since she is quite a fan of violence. There will always be casualties whenever she is on a hunt especially when there are a lot of busybodies hindering her from finishing her hunt as soon as possible.

Some fugitives find Bell's way of intimidating quite scary that it made them surrender as soon as her gaze landed on them ending up in them sent to the bondsmen in an unstable state of mind. But there were still fugitives who would still resist as if they could get away from a war god-like Bell. After all, criminals don't run from the law to get caught. But Bell has her own technique to knock out a fugitive uninjured but with them sent to the bondsmen through the compartment of Bell's car.

Brylee, on the other hand, is good at persuasion and sweet-talking. As a busybody herself, Brylee is good at finding information that she could use as leverage against fugitives. And most of the time, it works without needing to injure them. Though it may seem simple and harmless, Brylee would sometimes find herself driving back to the bondsmen with a handcuffed fugitive at the back seat trying to hit on her as if she would let any other man touch her.

Meanwhile, Briony and Brina were different. Briony can sometimes be reckless while Brina though smart and could be considered a genius is impulsive especially when Briony ends up being in trouble because of her recklessness. Without thinking too much, Brina would jump in to help Briony ending up with either of them or their target hurt or injured. But most of the time, it would be Briony and their target.

Briony could definitely heal herself. But in the case of the fugitive that is being injured, Brina would use her power to heal them with caution. The twins would make it look like the fugitive was not injured at all or that he was just hallucinating.

That is the moment that Brina would use her expert rationalization to convince that the fugitive was not injured. And she is successful all the time.

Briony chuckled. "Of course, he's not!" Then she looked at the back seat where Torin Wald is handcuffed between Bell and Brina. Then she looked at the grumpy-looking Bell.

Bell seems like she hasn't had enough of the violence as she had to pass all the gang men who attacked her to Bianca just to test her capabilities.

"That's impossible," Briony said in an almost inaudible voice. Why does she have a feeling that Bell would consume her violence to Torin Wald who is sitting beside her?

"Good," Lorcan replied with a hint of uncertainty.

"Uncle, are you sure that we should just leave the members of the Bedelia Gang as well as his wife behind?" Brylee who is on the wheels butted in.

After hearing that his wife could be arrested as well, Torin Wald squinted uneasily on his seat. Making Bell put her hand on his shoulder forcefully. Despite all the information that they gathered about Torin Wald, it turns out that he is still happily married to his wife that is ten years older than him.

"Leave them be," Lorcan replied nonchalantly. Briony has to mouth it out on Brylee since she cannot hear Lorcan's reply on the phone.

"How about the harbor?" Brylee asked again in a lower voice gesturing to Briony to ask that question to their Uncle.

"Uncle, how about the harbor?" Briony asked.

They could imagine Lorcan pinching the space between his brows. He didn't reply; instead, he hung up on Briony.

"What?" Brylee asked Briony with anticipation on her face.

Briony just shrugged her shoulders.

It didn't take long before they arrived in front of Iris's office. Iris and their Uncle were already waiting for them.

Despite its ethical issues, bounty hunting is legal. They have greater authority to arrest fugitives even without a warrant than the local police. They can invade the property of the fugitives and their family or friends in the search for them and always with an element of surprise.

Bounty hunters have to be resourceful and skillful in a lot of things. Before they hit the streets and stake out their target's addresses and previous whereabouts, they make thorough research and investigations about their target.

Being skillful in hacking saves them a lot of time and effort. It is normal to have one hacker in a team of bounty hunters and it just so happens that all of the Villan sisters were good at that but nothing could compare to Brina's hacking skills. It was beyond normal, as Briony would say.

Nowadays, bounty hunters use spy-gadgets that can be bought in the market or the black market but Brina as a tech-nerd managed to make their own which she and Briony had been using ever since they started bounty hunting.

Once in a while, Brylee and Bell would borrow some of their gadgets not that they really needed it, but just for amusement.

They are also allowed to use different kinds of weapons. Many bounty hunters carry guns. And the Villan sisters were some of them. Especially Bell who carries at least three guns and two knives with her.

Although violence should not always be in the equation, some fugitives tend to put up a fight when resisting arrest. But bounty hunters should not hurt or injure their targets as much as possible, the jail will not accept them because of legal liabilities and most definitely they are not allowed to kill them or they will not get paid.

Bounty hunting is a dangerous profession for men, more so, for women like the Villan sisters. Lorcan could not count the number of times that he had been injured while hunting a fugitive.

There were also incidents of bounty hunters getting killed while chasing fugitives. While some were killed years after by the fugitive that they arrested before or their relatives that came back at them for revenge.

Lorcan's eyes were narrowed at his nieces, checking out if any of them were injured. As much as he wanted to get them out of this business, they are someone that he cannot control, especially Bell.

And this is the least he could do, take them under his wing so that at least he could monitor them and make sure that they will be safe.

Lorcan narrowed his eyes at Brylee. He knows what she's been up to these past few days. And he can't help but be cautious of her words. He is sure that Brylee would do something that he will definitely not like.

"And why do you ask?" He replied.

Brylee put her hands on her waist. "Why do you have to be so standoffish?" She said, wiggling her brows.

"Uncle Lorcan, Brylee will be treating us for a meal. You should come. This would be like a celebratory meal." Brina said softly.

Lorcan stared at them for a couple of seconds before he finally nodded his head.

"So, Uncle Lorcan, what do you plan on your birthday?" Brylee asked with an inquiring look. They were seated at a private table that Brylee reserved for them at the main branch of their restaurant. She personally cooked for them.

"Do you really have to ask him about that, I am pretty sure Mom already prepared for something," Bell said indifferently. She doesn't understand why Brylee still has to ask him that when every year, their mother is the one always busying herself preparing for any occasion especially a birthday.

And Lorcan, who hates social gatherings cannot do anything about it.

"Bell is right. In fact, Mom said that they will be visiting the harbor for the fresh seafood that she'll be using for Uncle Lorcan's birthday." Brina said in a soft tone.

"And don't you dare put up a show, or else, I'll be kicking your ass out of this business," Lorcan growled while sending a threatening look at Brylee and Briony.

"Uncle Lorcan!" Briony and Brina said at once hearing Lorcan's cursing
