Chapter 38

“How are you going to punish her?”

Even she could not have disregarded the Countess, the mistress of Caitlin, and punished the maid one-sidedly no matter how. Besides, the County was exceptionally a place where the Countess’s will was done.

Even the Count did not stop Angelina’s actions and often just watched.

“That…”

“Mother, can I give you my opinion, as this is also related to me?”

The Countess couldn’t ignore Catherine, who was in front of her. The corners of Elysia’s lips went up when she saw Angelina’s face trembling.

“Yes, that’s right…”

“I wish Daisy would never work again for County Caitlyn as of today. How can she make Rowena misunderstand?”

Daisy was the Countess’ most trusted maid, with the exception of the maid chief. If Daisy, who handled matters related to the Countess, disappeared, this would make Angelina uncomfortable for a while.

“She’s only done one wrong, and I think it’s too much to cut her off.”

“Mother, if we just let her go, the discipline will not stand up properly.”

Elysia blinked and pointed to where Catherine was sitting.

“That… That would be it.”

In the end, Angelina had no choice but to agree with a look as if she didn’t like it.

It was because Catherine was a madam at a popular salon serving several nobles. If this story spread, it was Angelina who would be at a disadvantage. Of course, it didn’t have to spread.

“Rowena deserves punishment, too.”

“Yes…? Are you talking about me?”

Rowena, who had been a good listener from unknown when, innocently opened her eyes wide and pretended to be pitiful. It was disgusting. Her eyes, which were about to fall with tears, were planning to drive Elysia as a cold-hearted person.

“Yes. You say you’re not at fault, but it’s true that you made a fuss.”

“But—I misunderstood…”

“Aren’t you at the age where you should know why that’s not the case?”

Not even the Countess could save Rowena.

If she was a young child who had never even made her debut, that would be a different case, though Rowena was a mature adult.

“I wish Rowena would be grounded for a while.”

“…What?”

“How much do you mean by grounded?”

“That part has to be decided by the mother.”

Elysia knew how much Rowena liked to party because she had to take care of her dress to the point her hands blistered because of it.

She had looked at the gorgeous dresses she could not even dream of. So, she knew Rowena’s taste better than anyone else. She knew what Rowena liked the most and what jewelry she was passionate about.

“It’s your wedding soon, and if she can’t attend it, it’ll definitely be a talk.”

It was obvious why Rowena was attending the wedding.

It was Damon Raphael’s wedding. Perhaps, all the great nobles of the Caesar Empire were going to attend. There was no way the mother and daughter could miss that opportunity. After all, one of the reasons she liked parties was to find a suitable marriage partner.

“It wasn’t Rowena’s fault, so I think it’s better to be lenient.”

“Is there really none of Rowena’s fault?”

“That….”

Even if it was a meaningless wedding, she didn’t want the people of County Caitlyn, except for Edward, to attend. She thought it might be the most appropriate punishment for Rowena, who was only aiming for the wedding.

“I think she’ll need some time to figure out what she’s done wrong, at least for now.”

* * *

There was nothing wrong with Elysia’s words. In the end, Daisy was kicked out of the County, and Rowena was banned from going out for about a month.

Angelina was in a situation where she had no choice but to obey Elysia’s opinion.

“I’m sorry, Catherine. You saw what you shouldn’t see.”

“No, Your Grace. You don’t have to worry about it.”

The Countess took the fuming Rowena and left the place before she could not hide her anger.

“What happened today…”

“You want me to keep quiet, didn’t you?”

“Yes, please.”

Although it was shameless, she thought she could be relieved by Catherine’s attitude.

“The staff has been out since the incident happened, so rest assured.”

“Thank you.”

Was this the reason Catherine rushed the staff out when Rowena made a fuss…? Thinking that, Elysia was very grateful for her attention to detail, which she had never expected.

“Then, I’ll see you on the wedding day. Until then, there are places where the dress can be repaired.”

“Yes, go home safely.”

As Catherine finally left, Elysia let out a deep sigh. Her heart was beating like crazy.

“Haa… It will be fine for a while.”

In fact, her main purpose was to drive Daisy out of the County. Daisy, a faithful limb of the Countess, did many things for her. So, this meant that Angelina probably wouldn’t be able to move too soon until she had a new reliable maid.

Rowena was only used for this. It was because her real purpose was Angelina, not Rowena.

“I thought they would come, but they didn’t.”

After calming her pounding chest in the parlor and coming up to the room, neither the Countess nor Rowena came to visit. She had expected them to come to her and get mad at her…

When she got to her room, she was exhausted.

Even though she had only been here for a few days, Rowena’s room became more familiar than the attic. Elysia was amazed.

“It’s like I haven’t done anything yet.”

All she did today was cut off one of the maids and prevent Rowena from going out. It may be uncomfortable for a brief moment, but nothing has been fundamentally resolved.

Only one step had been taken now.

“…It’s going to be hard to survive.”

When Elysia thought of what would happen to Edward after she leaved, it was difficult to stay still in her nervousness.

“Why doesn’t Edward want to see my face?”

The excuse that the Countess blocked it didn’t work. At this point, she had no choice but to know. Edward was deliberately avoiding her. It was strange that she could meet the Count and Rowena, and the Countess, but not him.

Her head hurt.

She hadn’t even been married yet, and she had nothing to worry about… How did she come to join the noble society already…? The noble society that Elysia watched from the side was a place where there was more darkness than light.

“If I ran away, I want to live a normal life unconditionally…”

She didn’t know why she jumped into the middle of the vortex. She also became a Grand Duchess who was about to die. Although she wanted to avoid it so much, she had to walk in on her own feet.

With that thought, Elysia grabbed the veil, letting a sigh out just by looking at it. She now had less than a week left to finish the veil. The sound of sighs that could not be stopped just thinking about it gave her a headache.

“I mean, the useless family seal is a dragon.”

If it was a shield or other animal in moderation, it wouldn’t have been this hard. The elaborate dragon was too much for the novice Elysia to embroider.

“I’m going to sleep after a while.”

“If I tell the wife not to, I think it makes her want to do it more.”

“…Grand Duke?”

Just as she was about to pick up the needle and start embroidering, a voice she shouldn’t have heard echoed next to her.

Damon was gazing at her with bright blue eyes.

Elysia shuddered, and her body trembled at the cold eyes staring at her hand holding the veil. She was still afraid when she made eye contact with him. She felt as if she had been preyed upon by a viper, and her whole body got goosebumps.

Without her even realizing it, her body trembled.

“How could you…”

As it was last time, when she picked up the needles, Damon appeared out of nowhere like magic. He didn’t cast a spell on the needle… How did he find out about it? Or, did he cast a spell on the veil…?

“I promised to come every day.”

“Ah… You really came…”

“I’m sad. Still, I thought I was a pretty reliable husband.”

Come to think of it, perhaps he did say that he would come every night. Damon’s presence alone made her nervous, so she couldn’t really remember the conversations she had with him. All Elysia could remember was his terribly handsome face. It was a really dangerous look.

“I’m sorry, I must have been out of my mind and couldn’t remember.”

Even if she remembered it, she would not have believed that he would come every day. She couldn’t believe he had come back even now.

“I am so unreliable… I have to work harder.”

“No, I don’t mean that…”

When he said he would work harder, Elysia became embarrassed. She couldn’t figure out why he was doing what he was doing. He was someone who didn’t have to look good to her. It was Damon Raphael whom she had to look good to, not just her, but anyone else.

“I’m sorry, Grand Duke.”

There was no way he could be kind to Elysia without any reason. The only reason was that she was Damon’s fiancée.

“I must have made the wife uncomfortable again.”

He might have misunderstood her, so she shook her head passionately. That was actually right, but if she admitted she was uncomfortable… Elysia didn’t know if her life would not be guaranteed or not since the man in front of her killed humans like bugs if they made a mistake.

“Wife.”

“…Yes, yes?”

“Is there anything on the ground?”

“Ah… no.”

Over time, she got used to him calling her his wife. At first, it was a title that she was eager to fix, though now it was close to saying that she had given up. It wasn’t that she could fix Damon if she wanted to.

“Then, why do you keep looking down?”

“Ah, sorry.”

“Why would I make the wife apologize?”

Her body trembled as Damon approached the distance where she could feel his breath.
