The Rest, Only Noise

Chapter 431: Defense is the answer

At the end of January, the Knicks ranked first in the league with a record of 37 wins and 6 losses.

The team behind them was the Boston Celtics, who lost just one game after Bird returned.

It was the one the Knicks won in mid-January.

Before February, the NBA officially announced the roster for this year's NBA All-Star Weekend.

The Knicks have multiple All-Stars.

Patrick Ewing, Kevin McHale (starting), Benjamin Wilson (controversial), John Stockton (huge controversy) and Louie, who is once again head coach of the All-Star East.

Ewing and McHale were selected without any problems.

Those two are why the Knicks have done so well this season.

McHale averaged 24 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.7 blocks per game, while Ewing averaged 18 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists and 4.4 blocks per game.

The two of them, plus Oakley, made the Knicks second only to the Pistons in rebounding percentage and first in the league in offensive and defensive rebounds.

Wilson and Stockton are somewhat controversial.

As the Knicks' second-leading scorer, Wilson averaged 21 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists per game, surpassing James Worthy, who averaged 24 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists per game.

And Stockton averaged 13 points and 13 assists per game, surpassing Maurice Cheeks who averaged 20 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists per game.

The media in Detroit and Philadelphia basically thought they had been "looted."

The Knicks shouldn't have so many All-Stars.

In this quarrel, the New York media has never lost.

They analyzed one by one why the Knicks could have so many people selected, and the result was another scolding battle.

When the Knicks became a strong team, the strength of the New York media was undoubtedly the first in the United States.

They can set the tone on public opinion as they please.

Louie and Lorraine spent the day picking outfits for the All-Star Game.

This is Lorraine's forte, and Italians seem to have a natural understanding of what style is.

Louis still can't forget that when he arrived in Italy, he was discriminated against by the locals because he was dressed in a terrific way.

That kind of discrimination is not against your skin color, but because you dress too low.

So Louis suffered a double whammy that day.

His aesthetic is different from that of Lorraine. As long as he is comfortable and comfortable, he wants to buy it, and Lorraine hopes that the man around him is a dazzling gentleman.

It's like a woman shopping.

Men shopping is always purposeful, where to go, what to do, in one step, without wasting time.

Women like to walk around the streets, they enjoy the process, but men are tortured, they don't know what it means.

Louie felt like they had gone through all the suit shops in Manhattan, and Lorraine was barely able to find a few pieces that fit.

According to Louis, she picked ten pieces.

With Louie flying all over the U.S. to play games in addition to attending All-Star Weekend, basketball coaching is undoubtedly one of the most in-demand jobs for suits.

Louie never imagined he would spend $50,000 on a suit in one day.

"If Mommy knew about this..."

"Just don't tell her." Lorraine coquettishly.

Louis basically had no resistance and nodded in agreement.

It's February, and the Knicks roll over in front of a team that doesn't look like a threat.

washington bullet

This is a team that confuses New Yorkers because they always lose to the Bullets.

Today's Bullets are just an ordinary strong team with a 50% win rate and a chance to play in the playoffs, but at most it's only one round, and the Knicks should easily beat them.

But in the capital, the Knicks generals have shown varying degrees of malaise.

It feels like the Curry-era Warriors are going to Staples every year for a blacksmithing frenzy.

Louie couldn't figure out what magic was going on here, just like his teammates were baffled.

The next day, the Knicks went to Milwaukee to play back-to-backs.

They've had a tough fight, and the Bucks have had internal conflicts, but Don Nelson is a coach of prestige.

The league's No. 1 defensive team faces the league's No. 3 defensive team. What will the game be like?

The infamous Finals round between the Spurs and Pistons was the answer.

The Knicks are a little better. Their defense is strong, but their offense is very methodical. When Louis studies offense, he always brings a little manly romance. I hope the offense of the Knicks can have basketball aesthetics.

The attack under the system, if it goes well, is really beautiful.

The troubled Dale Ellis made seven 3-pointers in the second half of the game to silently cut the game.

112 to 110

The Knicks beat the Bucks.

When Nelson said goodbye to Louie, he repeated his point: "I really don't like you guys. Defend this way. In the end, it's like that. It's far from beating the Celtics."

"But Reed said we're on the right track." Louis laughed complacently.

"Can you believe what the old man said?" Nelson couldn't help laughing. "The old guy just wants you to go down this road, because he knows it's a dead end, and he can't win Boston by defense."

"I know."

"Then why are you...?"

"But I know better that this road has not been taken to the end." Louie said affirmatively, "Believe me, defense is the answer."

In an era of weak three-pointers and no malicious fouls, there were only two referees on the court. Although zone defense was prohibited, the pocket formation was a typical pseudo-zone defense. There was no defense for three seconds. You can hand-g the ball carrier as you like... Who's to say this isn't an era that emphasizes defense? Who's to say defense isn't the answer to this era's version?

Nelson is limited by the lineup, and the Bucks' defensive ceiling is just that.

Nelson may have really thought that Louie had walked into the pit, but sooner or later he found out that the end of the pit was the sanctuary.

Then, the Knicks ushered in the last game before the All-Star weekend.

At home, against the New Jersey Nets.

On game day, Bernard King's agent, Bob Wolfe, called Louie.

Wolfe made it clear on the phone that King had recovered and that he wanted to play.

Louie almost forgot that the Knicks had Bernard King.

Kim has been out of the public eye since he suffered an ACL two years ago, and now he's still recovering from an injury, but in a contract year.

The Knicks basically believed that he had been reimbursed for the season, but Wolff suddenly called and asked Kim to come back, obviously wanting him to prove himself in the contract year, so that he could sign a good contract in the summer.

"However, our staff is full." Louie does not want King to join the current Knicks.

"I don't believe everyone on the Knicks roster is better than Bernard, you have to make room for him or trade him!"

"It's a good idea, and I'll consider it."

Louie responded with a smile, then hung up.

It was not difficult for Louis to seriously consider the possibility of trading Bernard King.

Kim still has three years left on his annual salary contract, but with a team option for the first year, it's a sweet treat for some teams looking to clear space.

The problem is that the Knicks also have room for $800,000.

With the current ballooning salary cap, even if they swallow another $800,000, the Knicks' future salary space is considerable.

What's more, there are many young people in their team, and it is not time to renew their contracts.

It's just that it's impossible for him to send Bernard King away without some sweetness.

Not to mention that he also has a Manute Pohl on his hands that he has to deal with.

That night, against the Nets.

The Knicks generals were all hungry because they could take five days off after this game.

Everyone was as buoyant as they were in their last class.

In the face of the Knicks with full firepower, the Nets could not resist.

They don't even have the strength to resist.

141 to 100

The 41-point victory made Nets head coach Dave Wohl very unhappy: "They are killing us!"

"The New Yorkers think it's fun, good, and I hope they never become a mediocre team, otherwise, there will be a lot of teams that they bullied and collect debt with interest."

Louie is not interested in listening to these people's complaints, he is ready to go on vacation.

If given the chance, negotiate Bol's trade during All-Star Weekend.

Hold on, and the trade deadline will be over.

If Bol doesn't get traded, two new expansion teams will enter the league in June, and Bol will be swept away in vain, and the Knicks will get nothing.
