The Other Side of the Mask

38 Chapter 38: A Hectic Job

"Well, uh you can be my secretary for the day, especially since I need help with a lot of paperwork."

"Sure," I note my new job.

"Oh, but," I frown a bit, "I'll only do it part time because I don't want attention from the capital."

"Ok?"

He doesn't question anyways which is really helpful.

"Do you wanna try the mercenary guild? Many ex-bandits work there."

"Sure, I'll go."

"Oh, do you want me to go with you?"

"No, it's fine. Also can I go disguised, cuz this is the national guild right?"

"Yeah, sure many are disguised anyways."

I follow a small map and get to the guild. I walk up to the counter and tell them that I want to apply for a job.

"Hahaha! Whatcha doin for such a job, little girl?"

A couple of tall (fat) bandits come over, sneering down at me. I cover my nose, what a bad breath. I turn back to the counter, but the person also gives me a condescending look. I quickly tie my hair up. This is gonna be messy…

"Do you want a fight?" I look them in the eye, stone cold. I see some people shiver.

"H-hahaha! As if you could ever beat me!"

He charges at me and tries to grab my face. Only, he misses by a centimeter and pulls off my mask instead. I swiftly shift behind him and apprehend him. I glower down at him as he turns his head up to meet my eyes. What a waste of time…

I pick up my mask and put it back on.

"Wait!" someone shouts out.

"You're that girl from the night of the rebellion!"

A bandit walks up to me and shakes my hand.

"Thank you so much!"

I pull my hood over and look away, "It's nothing."

I let go of his hand and walk up to the counter. The man behind quickly hands over my ID card. The chatter resumes, and I walk up to the Quest board. After ripping off a few jobs near here, I set out to complete them. Some of them were escaped pirates, so when I went up to them, they ran away frightened. Too bad I was quicker. I apprehended them and escorted them back to the guild in about three hours. The guild members looked astonished, probably because the pirates' faces were purple and full of fear.

After collecting my money, I walk back to the port.

"Hey, do you wanna join my group?"

"-no my group!"

"We have more money!"

"Come -"

A bunch of group leaders follow me and stalk me, trying to recruit me. I try to calm my anger, but it's quite annoying… very annoying.

"WOULD YOU SHUT UP!"

Finally, they settled down. I drop them off outside ZhuWu's office, as their faces are purple with fear. The townspeople look at them crazily. I remove my hood and mask and greet ZhuWu.

He hands me a stack of papers which I finish quickly.

"Ah, yes, for now…"

"What do you mean for now?"
