Tang Li paid no heed to Old Lady Liu and smiled softly.

Old Lady Liu asked her sternly when she saw her smile. "Have I said something funny? Why are you so happy?"

Tang Li put down the cup and took a tissue paper to wipe the corners of her lips slowly.

Then, she looked up at Old Lady Liu. 

In comparison, she seemed rather calm.

She put the tissue paper by the plate. "I'm just a little jealous."

Tang Li stared at Li Yuan'er with her beautiful eyes. There was a soft smile on her face. "I sometimes wonder if my mother did not get cheated and framed before, would I have had a grandmother who would always side with me no matter what happens?"

All of a sudden, the room became quiet.

Li Wenyan's face darkened.

His face became serious. He stared at Tang Li with his dark eyes. He questioned her angrily, "Did you slap your younger sister yesterday?"

"If I said no, would anybody believe me?" Tang Li stood up and left the dining table. "It seems that the rule of proving somebody's guilty after looking at the evidence is not being applied here especially for an outsider like me. It's not a big deal even if I'm treated unfairly."

"Ah Li." Ou Yangqian voiced out first.

She could not ignore what Tang Li had just said.

She approached Tang Li and grabbed her hands. She explained gently, "Yuan'er was angry. She's talking nonsense. Don't take her too seriously. Your father, grandmother, and I didn't say that you slapped her. Regarding Yuan'er's dress, it's just a dress. We don't have to argue among ourselves for that.

"You're also Grandmother's granddaughter. Surely she adores you, right?

"Otherwise, she would not have mentioned her granddaughters just now. She's old now and surely she hopes that her family could live in peace. So, listen to me. Don't start an argument because of your misunderstanding."

Ou Yangqian had always acted like a mediator between her and the other family members in the Li family.

So, she had always appreciated Ou Yangqian's kind acts.

She would address her as 'Aunt Qian' politely no matter where she met her. 

She had been locked up by Han Jifeng in their house and she had numerous sleepless nights there. That was when she realized a lot of things. There was a trick in this world. Some people liked to retreat for the sake of advancing in life.

She could never become one of them as long as Ou Yangqian was on her side.

She remembered what happened to her the night Li Wenyan had sent her away in her former life.

That night, she wanted so badly to explain to her father that she did not steal anything. She did not even like the dress. The servant had sent her that dress because they had misunderstood Ou Yangqian's order.

When she had abandoned the task of tidying up her luggage and went to meet Li Wenyan, she had overheard the conversation between Li Wenyan and Ou Yangqian. Li Wenyan was consoling Ou Yangqian with a soft voice. "You have had a harsh life these past two years."

Her hand froze in midair.

Ou Yangqian's voice came from under the door. "It's not a harsh life. Ah Li is your child. Since her mother is no longer around, I should be taking care of her."

"Just put her in the eastern suburbs," Li Wenyan said. "It's enough that I have you and our two daughters. I cannot get used to the fact that there's one more person here."

The past came to Tang Li when she was looking at Ou Yangqian's beautiful face.

She smiled and stared straight into Ou Yangqian's eyes. She released her hands from Ou Yangqian's grasp slowly. "You're a family but I'm not. I'm an outsider.

"Yuan'er is not wrong," Tang Li continued. "I'm just your stepdaughter. I'm also an illegitimate daughter. You'll surely hurt your daughter's feelings if you always side with me and scold her instead."
