Spring Winds

Chapter 8 - Entrance Exam (3)

"..ugh..."

"no... no please!"

"..help... me..."

It's over; we can't win. Around me are grown men who are utterly defeated. They`re just too strong, even if we were to combine our strengths it would be utterly hopeless...

Ugghhh!!!

End me, please! I beg of you!

Just who needs all these bs rules!

Currently, I'm dying. In front of me is a massively long scroll of rules that I must memorize when the next few hours to get into the sect of my dreams! Although I try, I can't seem to pick up the characters or any of the rules. They all look like squiggles to me.

The rule of Yun is divided into four major groups, Justice, Righteousness, Virtue, and Peace. Each one of these at least has 1000 thousand rules in each one. Why? Why do these need to be the massive roadblocks before I can even take a half step in? Can't I enter first and then gradually learn these rules? Why do they have to be all shoved down my throat?

Even though... technically I had to study this beforehand...

But that is not the point! The point is, is that I'm able to get into this sect no problem! But, it doesn't seem that fate is going in that direction. Wind, wind, push fortune into a promising direction, please, and thank you.

Not to mention, some of these rules are absolute b*llsh*t! Look, look at how ridiculous some of these rules are!

Rule 536 from Virtue: You must not be miserly.

Rule 1036 from Justice: You must not steal.

Rule 3278 from Peace: You must not engage in personal fights.

Rule 4000 from Righteousness: You must not show anger or annoyance.

Okay, I admit that those rules were somewhat necessary, but why do they need 4000 rules to run this entire sect? Couldn't they condense all of the critical rules and make people memorize that instead of this other random and silly ones?

For example:

Rule 609 from Virtue: You must not write of love or s.e.x.

Rule 1252 from Justice: You must not joke or prank.

Rule 2365 from Peace: You must not make excessively loud noises.

Rule 3897 from Righteousness: You must not succ.u.mb to s.e.x.u.a.l desires.

Argh! What am I doing here! Did I apply for a monastery disguised as a sect! Who even has the time to think of all these rules! Sob, why?

"No, please! Give me another chance!"

"The rules of our sect are plentiful but necessary. If you can't memorize at least 75 percent of our rules, you will have points deducted from your overall admission score, which could affect whether or not you can join us. We have already established what was required to enter; there should be no excuses. If you want to join, try better next year."

The dejected participant walked out filled with regret and frustration. He justed missed his chance to enter one of the most significant sects of the land. Unless this guy is a genius at martial arts, he has a slim chance of admission. Chances of being able to join the other two great sects are slim. Also, he would need connections, money, or both. However, even then, he still might not get in with both. The requirements to join one of the three are incredibly high, and he would be weighed against the younger generations entering at the same time. He would have better luck joining a smaller sect.

An administrator walked out to the study room as if he were an executor selecting the next person to place on the block. Rows of people waited nervously, myself included, as we waited for which number he would call next.

Glancing down at his clipboard, he called out a number.

Admission 203.

The room let out an audible sound of relief. Myself, on the other hand, felt my heart drop down to my stomach.

203, it's me. It's my turn.

Letting out a shaking breath, I nervously rose from my desk and walked to the administrator.

"203?"

"Yes, that's me."

"Follow me."

I made a small nod and followed the administrator to the testing room. The room where my fate would be decided.

Knocking on the doors, we heard a muffled, "come in" and the doors were opened.

Inside was a large office that didn't contain many personal artifacts. Instead, it held stacks and shelves spilling over with different scrolls of all kind. Giant, small, bamboo, paper, and jade. All of these scrolls held an unimaginable amount of knowledge builts up from all the years.

Sitting behind a large desk was Master Wu. Donned in his blue and black sect robes, he quickly wrote something down on the paper in front of him. As soon as the door closed behind me, only then did he lookup.

"Number?"

"Um, 203, sir."

"Hmm, Zhu Na Ran. Is that correct?"

"Yes, yes, it is sir."

"Alright, we will begin your oral examination whenever you are ready."

Taking a deep breath, I slowly begin to recount everything I had memorized from the pass hours.

"Yun Sect's Book of Virtue. From the teachings of ancestors, there are eight chief virtues, Hyo, Ti, Zhong, Xin, Li, Yi, Lian, and Chi. The value that should be learned is Jen, as it is the supreme virtues of humanness in the Anatomy of Sacred. Jen incorporates all eight virtues as to understand the meaning of Jen; they must understand the eight virtues. The Yun Sect's Book of Virtue teaches sect members the virtues of Yun as well as all eight virtues.

Rule 1: Do not disrespect one's elders and seniors.

A few hours later...

Rule 4000: You must not show anger or annoyance.

Whew, finally have finished. I had to take a few tea breaks to lubricate my voice, so I didn't wear out too quickly. Luckily, Master Wu was lenient and allowed me some rest in between books. And to my surprise, I didn't burst into tears as expected. Master Wu said, and I quote, "You did quite well for your age. You managed to memorize as the rules and elements that make up our sect. Well done, I give full marks. I hope to see you around the sect after admissions." Whatever just happened in, there was a massive blur. I believe I was running off of sheer fear and adrenaline. Oh well, at least I passed.

After giving my sincerest thanks, I was ushered the pavilion where the physical examination would begin.

Which, initially I was pumped about, but after standing for about a couple hours, endlessly reciting the rules of Yun, I was pretty beat. But, a little rest should do the trick. After all, both martial artist and cultivators don't need that much rest to recover quickly. Maybe a quick power nap should do.

Fast forward a bit, and I am placed with the rest of the people that managed to pass the oral examination. There is a group of the people that did fail the verbal section, so they were the ones who went first in the physical. After all, the last chance they could get to redeem themselves is to hope they do exceptional in the physical examination. That way, they might have a chance of entering, even if it's not the top groups.

The people around me, roughly only a half of the original group is with me. Not to brag, but I think I might have a shot at this, based on how the events are playing out. With newfound motivation, I did a small victory dance in my mind and patiently waited my turn to take the physical examination. I'm so excited!
