(14) Salt Making Part II

In a very large tank, the collected sand is laid.

And Lau sprinkled the sand with sea water.

Lau's body is very forged, and she doesn't have a piece of fat all over her body.

Heavy sand and heavy sea water travel one after another.

There was a thin tube at the bottom of the tank, and the seawater seemed to flow from it.

"The task is to remove the salt ingredients from the collected sand. Various things are laid down at the bottom of the tank to prevent sand from mixing with the running water"

"Do you repeat this over and over again?

"It doesn't all flow in one go."

Hearing Lau explain, shift your gaze first.

Beyond that there was a large tank, where we could certainly see seawater flowing.

Lau was trying to be thorough with the explanation, in the middle of work, but moved the place.

Neither do the Ages go and watch forever as they work.

Thankfully, I follow behind it.

"By storing seawater in the tank once, small garbage builds up on the bottom. So this supernatant is the only one actually used to make salt."

Surprisingly, the tank was equipped with valves and tubes, and there was a copper pan ahead.

It opens the valve, but at the same time it flows out of nature and sea water.

If I say so, it's a water supply utilizing high and low differentials.

Firewood is already assembled under the pan and burns at any time.

Semi-automation of work on anything is underway here.

You can't lose, Agee thought.

Water vehicle power will need to be used to make it more efficient in the village of Siena as well.

To this end, it will be necessary to increase the number of carpenters or to increase the number of humans engaged in more productive activities.

Lau points to the pot and continues to explain, without reason to know Age's inner determination.

"The accumulated sea water is then set on fire. At the bottom of the pan where the water is gone, the salt is surprisingly formed. At the end of the day, we're done scratching it."

"That's a very big pot. What about lifting and lowering?"

"It's tough. The last thing you need to do to get the pan down is for three adults."

"You just want to make it a little lighter, don't you?

"Of course that is. But can you do it?

Age snorts forcefully at Lau, who raises questions.

"The same strength makes iron lighter than copper."

"If that's true, that would be very helpful."

"If you like, bring it on the occasion of your next transaction. I didn't bring this size tool to the boulder."

"Well, I guess so."

"Shall I measure the size later? However, it is a bit larger in size, which makes it expensive......"

"If it's easier to work with, you'll be able to make a lot of salt for it. I don't think so."

"Hey, Lau. Don't make up your mind."

"Regards. It's really hard."

Lough nods happily blocking the words of the elder with his mouth pinched.

It's Lau who's actually moving around more than the elders, so I guess I was glad to hear that the work would be easier.

I can't blame him.

The elders had no choice but to sigh, but that's why they didn't do anything to undo it.

All right, all right, now we're gonna make a lot of money with shovels and pans.

To Damn Age, Lau moved and brought a small plate.

On top of that, a small pile of salt is served.

Is it because it is natural salt? The size was uneven and the particles felt slightly larger.

"And this is the salt that was actually made. Just a little lick?

"Then don't hesitate. Yeah... salty...... but I also feel kind of sweet. It's supposed to be the same salt, but better than the salt you always eat, yummy?

"Right? We have a rank in salt. Upper and ordinary salt. Cook with this salt and anything will taste good. Mr. Age's village is the furthest from here, isn't it?

"It will."

"Maybe this salt won't flow far in the deal. Originally, because I don't let them out of the village very often, and because they're delicious, I won't let them all go."

"So glad you came in person."

"Right. However, since this salt is specially made, it will be slightly more expensive…"

Did you return it?

Age smiled bitterly.

But the good and bad salt is a big part of the taste of cooking.

Even so, the flavour of the ingredients themselves is considerably inferior to that of modern times, as there are no varietal improvements.

I wanted to keep the superior salt down if possible.

It's troubling. Normal salt can satisfy enough demand.

Should we put luxury goods on the balance of the deal?

"You seem pretty good"

"Can I buy it?

"Mr. Fernando, is that good?

"Somewhat."

"Right, just a little bit. Let's do that. Please."

"Every time."

Shake hands with disappointment.

The salt was to be delivered to two types, a large pot and a small pot, to prepare it even for the ship.

This is a shovel. Next time, the pan too.

The opponent has olive oil on salt and dried fish. Considering only this tour of the salt mill, it would be a sufficient achievement.

I was impressed that Ed, the elder, was relieved.

Agee, back on the beach, noticed there that Fran had not already swimmed and was waiting for her to return.

A sand mountain is formed and a splendid sand sculpture is made.

My hands seem a lot clever.

There was a barrel next to it, and a barrel of seawater contained numerous shellfish.

Age checks inside.

I've usually seen clams and sawdust, but I'm not very familiar with shellfish.

"Is this...? What's the matter, sir?

"I've picked it! Mussels. They're all over the bottom of the ocean. Here's how you grab a leopard with your feet, dig it back and you can pick it right away."

"It's a beautiful sandy beach. What's next to this?

"That's matte shellfish! It's delicious. I can eat it."

"This is... oysters, and clams"

"I traded that for Oba. Age, do you like shellfish?

"Yeah, I love it."

"Right...... good. Eat later!"

Fran hands the barrel all the way to Age.

Waved water overflowed slightly from the barrel.

An innocent Fran smile seems to wash his tired heart of negotiation.

Let's make this shellfish look good too.

There's a natural smile on Age's face.

At night, shellfish dishes, such as wine steaming and sautéed butter, lined the centre.

Other steamed herring dishes.

Basically, they don't eat much sashimi or grilled fish on this island.

Processed as dry or mostly steamed dishes.

Is the only exception about pickled raw herring vinegar?

But seafood was not the only specialty of this village.

Ed, the elder, was proud of himself and strained his chest a little.

"How about the taste of our olives?

"It's great. Fresh olive oil, huh? How is Mr. Fernando?

"Drinkable oil."

"That expression, that's perfect for selling words"

"You guys have a good time. Just as the olives bear fruit, they have just harvested."

Simple flavors, such as olive pickles, olive oil and salt, and salads with lemon-like citrus and dried grape dressings, but rather delicious dishes line up.

What Age learned is that when the oil is really fresh, it doesn't heartburn at all, even if it's on a large amount of it.

This journey is quite fascinating because of the many meals that are usually unsavory.

No heart, Age herself, and Fernando should have gotten a little plump.

"Is olive oil also a specialty of this village"

"Bye. Our village uses salt, olive oil, and dried fish to trade."

"You can handle it without a field, because of that, right?

"Bye. People can't live without food. But without salt, man cannot live."

"Now let's bring food, not just leather, from our house. Perhaps beans, kales, carrots, onions, all great."

"All go well with olive oil"

Olive oil and wine are the protagonists of the trade.

Instead, the Greeks used these two to make deals, creating a number of cities in the Mediterranean area, the Polis.

Because it was something that could not be produced anywhere else, I was able to get more food than anywhere else.

As a result, we were able to increase the number of craftsmen and bureaucrats over peasants.

But Age's eyes went not only to those protagonists, but to the porridge placed on the edge.

White porridge is not the same shade as regular barley porridge.

When I try it, the milky taste gets in the way and I don't know the ingredients of the porridge clearly.

But it was definitely not wheat.

What's this?

I didn't think so.

- Rice.

"By the way, I'm so curious, what is this porridge?

"You've never seen this before?

"No, it looks too familiar, I thought it might be a mistake"

"This is a type of vegetable that can only be taken on the south side of the island. Soak in milk and cook slightly to eat. Well, maybe it's not very tasty."

"Can you show me what you had before cooking?

"I don't mind that... but say something strange."

What Ed brought was certainly rice.

Unfortunately, it's not japonica rice, it's indica rice, but that doesn't matter, Agee thought.

The rice I couldn't help but eat is right in front of me.

"Can you get this rice? No, I don't want it to be a deal. Personally."

"Personally? It's getting strange. How much?"

"Zazu, yes... about 100 km"

"A hundred kilometers!? I don't know, it's like understanding what the Lord thinks."

"Fair enough. I just like it personally."

"What the hell is hidden in this food?

"There's a delicious way to cook"

"Don't be silly. There's no way this stuff tastes good."

I guess Ed didn't understand Ed because Age's words were sincere.

Rice was hardly a popular food.

Unpopular days like being turned into porridge or treated like a salad.

But at least not for Age.

Fried rice and pilaf would be delicious even in indica rice.

What about Risotto?

Is the rice balls just right?

One rice dish after another comes to mind and I look forward to going home.

This is the best harvest of this journey, Agee thought sincerely.
