After the southern region of Somalia was administered by Italy in 1950, Barre was sent to the Italian Army Officers School to study; he returned to China in 1954 and served in the police force.

In the 1960s, British Somalia declared independence, and the next day the parliament unanimously approved a plan to merge with Italian Somalia. The southern and northern parts of the country were merged, and the Republic of Somalia was formally established. After Somalia became independent, Barre served as colonel, deputy commander and major general of the National Army.

Time came to 1969; Barre's era finally arrived, and President Abdirashid Ali Shemak was assassinated. Six days later, National Army commander Mohamed Siad Barre launched a coup that overthrew the government of Mohamed Ibrahim Egal, suspended the constitution, banned political parties and dissolved parliament. At the same time, the Supreme Revolutionary Council, chaired by Siad, was established to form a new government; the name of the country was changed to the Somali Democratic Republic.

Barre has some military talent, but his ability to govern is indeed unflattering, and can even be said to be a complete mess!

After ruling a country for more than 20 years, he has made no achievements in the economic field; the people in the country are even more impoverished, and there is no happiness at all. In other words, the Somali people are not highly civilized. If it were another country, the regime would have been overthrown long ago.
