pretend you don’t understand

It has been three days since I visited Jin Yu-han’s musical troupe to cheer.

Now Yeonwoo is back on set and filming “Sketch.”

“Today’s scene is going to be released really freely, so it’s up to you. To borrow the documentary feeling, I’m not really going to tell you anything, so let’s go on a trip thinking we don’t have a camera.”

At the words of director Park Chan-hong, Yeon-woo nodded.

In the scenario, Jay went to an indie music festival and a few days later, to find inspiration for a new song, he got on a bus out of town with a guitar alone.

The only staff accompanying him was director Park Chan-hong and camera director.

“Okay. No one recognizes it. It’s okay if you put it realistically.”

I didn’t hire a bus for filming.

There were not many passengers on the actual bus going out of town during the daytime outside of Seoul, but there were only the elderly, so no one recognized Yeonwoo.

Just a curious glance at the bearded man riding on the camera.

Since they are scenes that will contain less than a video without dialogue anyway, Yeonwoo sat with her legs crossed in the seat with the rear wheel of the bus in the form of a Korean-American looking at the scenery outside the window with interest.

‘Ah, here it is.’

When the bus arrived in the suburban town, which had been notified in advance, Yeon-woo rang the bell and got off, and as if on a real trip, director Park Chan-hong and camera director followed.

Yeon-woo wore a mask, and director Park and the camera director walked along from a little distance apart.

‘Landscape Bike. It’s here.’

Yeon-woo moves naturally as if traveling alone, following the course that director Park Chan-hong had planned in advance through a field trip.

There is no staff to control the scene, and there are no stores that have been talked about filming in advance.

I bought a bike from my grandfather’s old bike shop and came out, and the camera quietly zoomed across the street to take a picture of Yeon-woo pulling the bike out of the shop.

And Yeon-woo, with a guitar on his back, rides a bike freely and leaves the town.

The camera captured the appearance of Yeon-woo riding a bicycle, naturally moving away from the sunlight.

Jiying-.

When the phone rang in my pocket and I answered the call, I heard the voice of director Park Chan-hong.

– Okay cut. come back

“Yes. Director.”

Yeon-woo turned the steering wheel and rolled his legs to return to where Park Chan-hong was, laughing.

It is a very different filming method to hear an OK sign on a smartphone while riding a bicycle alone.

When you find out that the country’s best commercial film director and the hottest actor are filming on a suburban country road with just a camera and in a way that a movie club wouldn’t even do, add a bit of exaggeration and more reporters than the number of residents in this neighborhood will chase after you. I didn’t even know how to go.

Jay tied his bicycle in front of Haejanggukjip, which is located on a secluded two-lane national road, and went out to eat Haejangguk.

Haejangguk is a Korean food that Mr. Jung introduced from morning to Jay, who was suffering from a hangover the next day after participating in an indie festival dinner party.

After he ate it as if possessed by the taste, it became Jay’s first favorite food in his life in Korea.

As he is not yet familiar with Hangul, he sees the words “Haejang-guk” on his smartphone, and if the shape is the same, he goes in and only knows how to say “Haejang-guk, please.”

It was the only part in today’s filming that was pre-cast and cooperated for filming.

Jay comes out after eating a delicious haejangguk.

Jay, walking with his guitar around to pick up the bike he had tied to the thin streetlight next to the store, stopped.

Embarrassment quickly spread across his face.

The camera director captured the face and naturally moved the frame to the street lamp where the bicycle was tied.

“What the-.”

A gray street lamp standing alone with only the front wheel tied up and the frame and rear wheel missing.

For a moment, there was silence, and only birdsong chirped.

It became an ironically funny scene as only the green trees and the peaceful chirping of birds could be heard to contrast with Jay, who was standing there with a serious expression while looking at the remaining front wheel.

Then, Jay takes out his smartphone from his pocket and calls somewhere.

“Hey Mr. Jung.”

– Oh, what’s going on?

“I said last time that Koreans don’t steal anything from cafes? It’s not about coveting a laptop or a bag, it’s about coveting that person’s seat.”

As he shrugged his shoulders, he heard a voice over the receiver as if he was talking nonsense.

– Right. We don’t covet other people’s things. I also leave the parcel in front of the house.

“But why does my bike have only the front wheel left. I only ate for 30 minutes and came out.”

And after a moment of silence, Yeon-woo tilted his head as if he had heard something from Mr. Jeong.

“Um-bong? What is that?”

– Hmm, there is such a thing. I’ll pick you up right away. Where are you?

“Well. I have no idea where this is. I was thinking of riding my bike back the way I came.”

– If there is any store nearby, please take a picture and send it. I’ll look for it and take a navigator.

Yeon-woo looked at the Haejang-guk restaurant in front of him and nodded.

“Okay. Thank you. Sorry to bother you.”

The moment I hung up the phone and picked up my smartphone to take a picture of the store, the battery ran out.

“···Ah, nothing is going to happen. You damn Korea.”

Whenever I get out of town and get inspiration, I stop my bike for a while, take out my guitar, and record with my smartphone, so the battery must have run out quickly.

“Okay cut.”

With the director’s autograph, Yeon-woo approached Park Chan-hong.

The director sees Yeon-woo like that and explains the next scene.

“If you’re walking up that hill shoulder-to-shoulder, we’ll get a view from here. And when the truck stops, you can get on it. Probably not going according to the script.”

“That’s the scene. Did you find the right actor?”

When Yeon-woo asked, director Park Chan-hong gave a meaningful smile.

“I got it. Let’s start filming. I’ll leave this scene entirely to your improvisation.”

If it was a normal filming, the script reading would have been completed before the movie even started, and if you didn’t attend, you would have heard in advance who was cast because it is a supporting role that is quite important, but this movie was out of the general category in every way.

‘So it’s fun and I’m looking forward to it. It’s an improvised story that doesn’t know what’s going to happen in the future.’

Of course, there is a big frame flow, but every shoot was improvised on the spot.

However, that aspect seemed to make him more immersed in the role of Jay, who returned to a foreign country called Korea.

Yeon-woo nodded, put the guitar on his back, and trudged down the narrow hill where cars don’t often go.

And the director who quietly stands there and captures Yeon-woo walking up the hill alone in the sunset scenery.

Now that it was far away, Yeon-woo was seen as a black silhouette in the setting sun.

Then, a 1.5-ton white small truck slowly climbs the hill following Yeonwoo from behind.

Seeing that there were loads of vegetables in the back, it was as if they were leaving work after selling vegetables at the market.

A truck that goes past Yeonwoo, then stops and then slowly backs up again.

And the truck owner and Yeon-woo seemed to be talking about something.

“Excuse me, can you take me to the nearest bus station?”

Yeon-woo, who was immersed in the role of Jay, who could not speak Korean, was not embarrassed by the appearance of the opponent in front of him, and spoke confidently in English.

The owner of the truck tilts his head when he sees Yeon-woo like that.

“I saw the young bachelor flirting, did you come from a foreign country?”

The person driving the truck was an old woman.

‘In the scenario, it was obviously a young man who was a vegetable seller.’

Looking at the cameras installed here and there on the truck, it is clear that the truck that director Park Chan-hong said was correct.

‘Then it means that this is the actor who was cast.’

The opposite role changed from a young man to a grandmother, but I nodded thinking that this might be more appropriate considering the background.

And rather than panicking, Yeon-woo is more immersed in the role of ‘Jay’ and approaches the truck.

“Can you drive me to the nearest station?”

Yeon-woo asked in English and gestured to himself and then pointed to the passenger seat again.

Then the old woman nodded her head from the driver’s seat.

“Iing. I’m lost. Hey, get on. It’ll get cold soon after sunset.”

Seeing the grandmother nodding her head, Yeon-woo got on the passenger seat.

“Is the young girl Uzada lost? What’s her name?”

“Sorry?”

“What’s your name? Your name. Don’t you know what your name is?”

“Are you asking my name? It’s Jay. Jay.”

Acting like I don’t understand my mother tongue was more difficult than I thought.

A work to express hyper-realism by identifying oneself with the character in the play.

In other words, it requires a lot of method acting.

Of course, I had never acted like I did not know Korean in my previous life, but fortunately, when conducting an information stealing operation, I understood the language of the country and pretended not to hear it.

It’s easier to divulge secrets in front of people you don’t understand.

Upon hearing Yeon-woo’s answer, the old woman nodded her head.

“Your name is Jaehee? You have the same name as your granddaughter and granddaughter next door. She’s pretty, so her name is like a girl’s name.”

“Yeah, Jay.”

“Draw it. It’s Jaehee.”

In order to pretend that he did not understand, Yeon-woo kept thinking of other thoughts in his mind, and deliberately let the words of the other actor as much as possible.

Slowly driving down the country road at a slow pace, Grandma opened her mouth again.

“Did the bachelor eat?”

“rice?”

“Draw. Did you eat?”

Yeon-woo cares while stroking his chin.

‘If it were Jay, you would have just understood the word Bob in the conversation. What will you say when you hear rice?’

I opened my mouth after thinking about it from Jay’s point of view.

“Haejangguk?”

“Iing. You must have been drinking. Eat a bowl of haejangguk or go. I’ll go home and give you a bowl of shiraegi soup and rice.”

He couldn’t understand what he was saying, but when he heard the word haejangguk, Jay nodded his head.

And the truck loaded vegetables and Yeonwoo and headed slowly to Grandma’s house.

“Jae-hee, my grandmother will cook shiraegi soup soon.”

An old woman pointing a finger at an old wooden table and entering the kitchen.

Jay made an expression that wondered what was going on, and with a squeaky gait, he suddenly followed the old woman he had never seen before into the house.

After that, director Park Chan-hong and camera director naturally followed.

‘Grandma’s acting is not normal. You’re really acting in hyper-realism that fits the documentary format.’

In fact, it feels like an old woman I met while passing by brings a lost foreigner home and serves a meal.

Obviously, the director and the camera are following Yeonwoo, but they do not give a single glance to that side.

Yeon-woo also brainwashed himself by saying that he was an American ‘Jay Miller’ and looked around curiously at the seniors in the living room display case.

Not long after, Grandma opened her mouth as she came out of the kitchen with a bowl.

“Come here. It’s ready, so eat it right away.”

Jay staggered to his seat and sat down.

“Thank you so much for your favor.”

“I kept saying something with a curly language. Hey, eat it.”

Jay tilts his head while looking at the food in front of him.

“It looks different from the Haejang-kuk I’ve seen so far.”

The old woman nodded as she heard Jay talking to herself.

“Draw it, haejangguk.”

“Thank you for providing the food.”

Saying thanks in English, Jay raised a spoon and scooped out a spoonful of rolled rice noodles and brought it to his mouth.

Director Park Chan-hong shouts from behind.

“Okay cut.”

After hearing director Park Chan-hong’s autograph, he returned from J to Yeonwoo.

Only then does Yeon-woo bow her head and say hello to her grandmother.

“Hello. Senior. This is Ryu Yeon-woo.”

“Aigoo-senpai, what is it? I don’t know how this old man did well.”

The old woman in front of me answered with a smile of kindness and the old woman’s dialect-mixed tone was nowhere to be found.

Then director Park Chan-hong opens his mouth behind Yeon-woo.

“Yeonwoo-kun. You are my mother.”

“···Yes?”

“Until 30 years ago, you were working as an Asian actress in Hollywood.”

“My son praises this mother highly. It wasn’t a grand activity, she was just a minor actor.”

Yeonwoo wasn’t the only one who couldn’t speak his native language today and did an acting that he couldn’t understand.
