With the current technological level of human beings, can we really create a world of our own?

So someone did it, and after the moon landing program, they started the most exciting scientific project called "Biosphere 2".

In 1982, at a meeting in the countryside of the Lansey Empire, a group of the world's leading scientists, after heated discussions, decided to conduct an experiment.

That is, to establish a closed structure space on the earth as an experimental base for the next behavior in the future.

The habitat after human migration to Mars, the sanctuary after the outbreak of a nuclear war in the world, and of course, it can also be used as one of the largest laboratories of the earth's ecosystem.

This is also the origin of the name "Biosphere 2", and "Biosphere 1" is also the earth itself that we humans inhabit.

This was a very great idea back then. The earth nurtured human beings, but today's human beings want to leave the earth and create an "earth" for them to inhabit.

In other words, human beings hope that they can already begin to be "God".

According to the design, "Biosphere 2" needs to cover an area of 13,000 square meters, and there are 5 kinds of terrains and forms in it: tropical rain forest, savannah, as well as swamp, desert and ocean.

Not only the seawater is configured by using the proportion of seawater and freshwater outside, but also artificial machinery is used to create waves. In addition, there must be two villages of artificial creatures, which gather together agricultural areas and residential areas.

At the same time, in order to fully simulate the real ecology of the earth, it is necessary to put 3,000 kinds of plants and 1,000 kinds of microorganisms inside the "Biosphere 2".

Crucially, "Biosphere 2" is an enclosed environment consisting of 8,000 white-painted steel beams and 6,000 pieces of glass.

However, because the temperature difference between the inside and outside will cause uneven pressure, which will damage the glass panel, two variable volume chambers called "lungs" are also installed in the "Biosphere 2" to adjust the air pressure inside the closed structure. .

It's just that for such an exciting gold plan, it is not difficult to find the "financial master", and Ed Bass from Texas eventually became the main investor.

Although the final construction cost of "Biosphere 2" has reached about 200 million US dollars, which is six times the budget, it was successfully completed in the end.

September 26, 1991

A total of eight researchers, four men and four women, entered the "Biosphere 2" built on the desert at an altitude of 1,200 meters in Arizona under the cheers of the public and the media, just like aerospace heroes.

Humans at this time finally began to try to play "God" once.

However, since the closed hatch of "Biosphere 2" was closed, all the bad things started.

According to the original regulations, after the hatch is closed, nothing is allowed in or out of the "Biosphere 2" within two years. In other words, all life in "Biosphere 2" must adhere to two year.

The eight people must eat the real things they farm, eat the circulating water, and breathe the circulating oxygen.

However, the problem is here. Survival has become the only goal. The eight researchers who entered the "Biosphere 2" have no other systematic plans to progress.

Ten days after the hatch was closed, the accident happened.

One researcher stuck his finger into a threshing machine and cut off half of his middle finger.

Although the eight researchers had received professional training before entering Biosphere 2, they did not expect this to happen.

In fact, if they are really in the natural environment in the wild, after this happens, they have only one choice, and that is to "go with the flow".

After all, this was an experiment, so a few hours after the researcher was sent out to treat the wound, the "no entry and exit for two years" rule was broken from the start.

Over time, the eight researchers discovered that this kind of thing was really just a small matter, and something bigger happened because their lives were threatened.

What caused this threat was that the oxygen levels inside Biosphere 2 began to drop.

This phenomenon first caused the seawater inside Biosphere 2 to become sour, resulting in the death of many animals, most of which were vertebrates.

Then all the pollinators start to die, and the dark creatures like cockroaches and ants that can be seen everywhere in the building start to run amok.

Researchers are puzzled, because the carbon dioxide and oxygen cycles inside "Biosphere 2" have been verified and designed many times.

However, they finally found that the microorganisms in the fertilizer used to grow crops and the concrete used to build buildings would have a serious impact on the composition of the atmosphere, which no one had thought about before.

Of course, the most serious problem caused by reduced oxygen levels is the threat to human existence.

If Biosphere 2 were a base on Mars, the eight warriors today would really only exist on textbooks and hanging on walls.

In January 1993, when the oxygen content in "Biosphere 2" had dropped from the original 21% to 14%, and the eight researchers were struggling to support, the outside world began to decide to input oxygen into the interior.

Although the eight researchers in the circle have basically achieved self-sufficiency, from the perspective of scientific experiments, oxygen is the basis for all survival. If oxygen is input from the outside, then this experiment can basically end in failure. .

On June 26, 1993, after stubbornly surviving for one year and nine months, seven of the eight researchers who first entered chose to leave the "Biosphere 2", even if it was only two years away from the originally agreed time. for three months.

On March 6, 1994, the second group of residents, consisting of five men and two women, entered the "Biosphere 2" again, but this time the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was out of control, so they stayed for only ten months. Evacuate quickly.

So far, "Biosphere 2" has never been lived in.

Later, from "human feat" to "luxury science", in fact, the media trend at that time changed very quickly.

Many people have even begun to reflect on what such an expensive experiment has brought to human beings.

Actually there is still a little bit.

The imbalance of oxygen to carbon dioxide ratios in the inner atmosphere, for example, is an invaluable lesson.
