For one month I lived like a ghost. A real life example of the Living dead, a zombie without feelings. I ate,  slept and drank but  I was not living, I was barely even existing.

The only time I got to really, truly smile was when I tucked in Ezinne at night or when I catch Sid secretly watching me in church. That's the only time I got to genuinely smile other times I felt Nothing.

Numb!

Dead!

That's all.

Ezinne was vacating from school today and I was invited by the teacher to get her result.

"Your daughter is the brightest most intelligent and smartest student I've ever had the p.l.e.a.s.u.r.e of teaching in my thirty years as a teacher. But this last month she has been acting really weird. She was present in class but absent in her presence."

"The week you fell Ill when her father dropped her off in school I didn't like how she looked, like a suffering scared child. I am sorry to say this but your husband looked very mean. Not that I'm saying it to laugh at you or saying it as a gossip. I'm over sixty and I can't see myself gossiping. God forbid!" She said as a matter of fact.

"I am saying this because I am concerned for your daughter. She is a genius. She is so sweet and so lovely. And I am really hoping that her light would not be deemed by any circ.u.mstance. I see you as a strong woman and a good mother, I hope you protect her." She concluded smiling. The trust in her eyes was undeniable and reassuring.

I could not tell exactly what I was feeling as she spoke. I just watched her mouth move and nodded when it was necessary. I felt like I was outside my body.

"I will take good care of her and make sure that her light shines so bright no one is going to be able to come close lest they risk getting blind." I assured her.

Ezinne rested her head on my t.h.i.g.hs all through her teachers speech. She looked very sad and I almost cried just by looking at her.

"I trust you will," she smiled.

"Thank you for trusting me," I smiled back. She Brought her hand forward and I took it smiling. She bade me goodbye after other protocols were observed.

"Wow, this is the first time you are going below 90% bad bad." I said to Nne while opening the car door for her to get in.

"Sorry mum, I just couldn't understand what the teacher was saying. I could only hear you screaming, and daddy shouting at you. I could only hear whip whip. I'm sorry I disappointed you mummy. It was like I lost my mind." She sobbed in her hand.

"Oh baby please don't cry. I'm the one who disappointed you by making you face all this. By exposing you to such inhumane situations. I'm the one who is sorry. Please forgive me" I whispered, patting her back.

She hugged me, her tiny hands going around my equally tiny waist. A mother and daughters love most beautiful." I love you mum and I'll make you proud of me, I promise you."

"I'm already very very proud of you and mummy loves you too. More than she loves anything and anyone in this whole wide world. More than she even loves herself. " I grinned.

I kissed her forehead and pulled her cheeks till a grin appeared on her face. She tickled me and we both laughed out loud.

I consciously omitted "Daddy loves you too."
