Lucky Star

Chapter 29 - JIANG MEI...

"Having some self-awareness is good you know. When you know how good your fashion sense is when in a hurry why bother with it?" De Xi asked sarcastically.

"Ouch! That hurts Eva. Anyways I won't hold a grudge against a weak patient." Jiang Mei said as she flicked her hair dramatically.

"Why don't we confirm who is a weak patient? Let's go fencing, coincidentally I have time today." De Xi said as she smiled coldly and leaned back in her seat.

As soon as Jiang Mei heard De Xi's offer to go fencing, her hands went cold and her smile froze.

She chuckled dryly and uncomfortably shifted in her seat until she was sitting in a very humble manner, nothing like when she first came in.

"If you want we can even have a wager." De Xi continued with a pleasant smile but her smile was creeping the life out of Jiang Mei.

"Older Cousin, let's not hold grudges against a disillusioned lady who doesn't know what is good for her." Jiang Mei pleaded humbly as she looked like she was on the verge of tears.

"Don't start crying or else people will think I like to bully weak people." De Xi said it in a casual tone as she took another sip of her Americano.

"Who dares to think like that about my Older Cousin? Just say a word Older Cousin, I shall beat them up for you." Jiang Mei said as she nodded her head like a henpecked subordinate.

"You change your colors faster than a chameleon. Keep up the good work and you will be ruling the entertainment industry someday." De Xi said as she looked at Jiang Mei in disdain but the latter failed to catch the disdain in the former's tone.

"Thank you Older Cousin. If you say it then I am for sure ruling the industry someday." Jiang Mei said in an ingratiating manner, with a perfect amount of bootlicking.

"You know you are not just embarrassing me but also the Mu Family right?" De Xi asked with a sigh as she looked at Jiang Mei in exasperation.

"How?" Jiang Mei asked innocently as she looked at De Xi with a pleasing smile.

De Xi sighed as she pinched the bridge of her nose, unable to continue this meaningless conversation anymore.

"I guess I have annoyed you enough to me last for at least a month. Now, let's get down to the proper business. Why did you want to meet me?" Jiang Mei asked seriously as the waiter served her Cappuccino and left.

De Xi sighed as she took another sip of her Americano, helpless and conflicted.

"Is it regarding Brother-in-law... Brother Bai?" Jiang Mei asked hesitantly, not sure which was the right way to address him.

"No." De Xi denied her guess and sighed in defeat.

"It is about... Ethan... Ethan Vetrov." De Xi took the name which was taboo among her close friends and people who knew about the incident eight years back.

As soon as Jiang Mei heard the name she winced as if the cold Cappuccino burnt her tongue.

"Sometimes I doubt if my mind has a heart too. Why did I spare him that day?" De Xi asked herself as she sighed.

"Do you remember when we were in London, some rich kid was trying to connect him with you after you went to have dinner with him once and you sassily said..." Jiang Mei started with a soft chuckle as she fondly looked at De Xi.

"I said, 'People don't just come into my life and stay, they need to earn their spot.' that is what I said didn't I?" De Xi repeated her exact words during that time with an amused chuckle.

Jiang Mei nodded her head as she warmly smiled at De Xi. Clearly happy after seeing the warm, amused smile on De Xi's face after months.

"I reminded you of that because, it is hard for people to earn their places in your life but once they do, it is hard for you to remove them completely, more like it is impossible." Jiang Mei said with a fond painful smile.

"I wonder why? I was never someone who cared about relations, for me, they were just another unnecessary emotion." De Xi said as she chuckled bitterly.

"Keep fooling yourself, by considering you as one of those emotionless robots." Jiang Mei said as she looked at De Xi coldly.

De Xi chuckled softly as she shook her head in helplessness, highly amused by the pouty, angry face.

Jiang Mei was trying so hard to make her look angry and intimidating but failed terribly at that, instead, she was making De Xi want to laugh even more.

"I was right when I thought that you could always cheer me up and clear up my mind." De Xi said as she sighed in relief and smiled warmly.

"I am glad I could be of help." Jiang Mei said with a warm smile as she beamed with joy.

"So..." Jiang Mei hesitated to openly ask her doubt.

"I will tell him as soon as I find the right opportunity." De Xi said as she nodded her head solemnly.

"I am not forcing you, Eva, just... He has changed since then has come a long way. I agreed and supported you eight years back and now I feel that you should tell him, he earned it." Jiang Mei spoke tenderly as if afraid of hurting De Xi with her words.

"You all say he has changed and has come a long way... But I am still hesitant, maybe in the end all I learned was, how to be strong alone."

"Asking me to suddenly share and depend on someone seems..." De Xi trailed off not knowing how to describe the strange feeling.

"A Queen is not born, she is made. And you are a Queen, the journey was tough and alone, you deserve the doubt you have on others.." Jiang Mei said with a small and sad smile as if she was guilty of De Xi being like this.
