Clyde’s brows furrowed when he saw Ashley’s tearful face.

“Brother please don’t pick on my fiancée.”

“What do you mean? I would never do such a thing.”

“You should be aware that your mere presence is frightening.” After he said something terrible, Clyde went straight to Ashley’s side. With a gentle smile, he patted her on the head.

“Have you finished?” She asked in a whisper.

“Yeah.” He nodded with a pleased look on his face. It reassured her that the black wolf had made it to Furt Island.

“Brother, it’s been a long time.” Clyde bowed as he lightly held Ashley’s shoulder in his protective embrace.

“Yes. I haven’t seen you for ages. I have come to see what’s inside, but apparently was it your doing that the presence has subsided, or was it my imagination?”

‘They know!’ She felt the hairs on her back stand up.

However, Clyde didn’t seem to be in the least bit dismayed, and his face clouded over with sadness, “Yes, that’s right. Its lifespan has just ended. I was about to report it to the royal court, but as expected by elder brother, your timing is perfect.”

“—I see. It was really good timing. Then, let’s take care of the body here.”

Ashley was taken aback and Clyde grasped her stiff shoulders tightly.

“Unfortunately, there was no body. Just before its life ended, its body emitted an intense light. Then, as if dissolving into thin air, the body disappeared. There was no trace of it left. It was a strange thing.”

“Gone?”

“Everything. The only thing left is the empty stable. Well, it is a mythical being with an unknown ecology.”

“—I see. What happened to our brothers and the chief magician? Are they in there?”

“Well, they weren’t inside. I took care of that thing by myself. I believe they’re probably somewhere in the mansion.” Clyde tilted his head as he said that.

The king raised an eyebrow. Ashley felt a chill in her core when she realized he was suspicious. But Clyde kept his smile on his face, “What about my sister-in-law’s birthday party? I heard it’s a big event, with all the leading figures in the country attending.”

“The celebration has been rescheduled to next month. I have already notified everyone.”

“—I have not heard anything about it.”

“I see. It seems that you were forgotten to be notified.”

For a moment, the two stared at each other seriously and then let out a laugh.

‘Scary.’

Ashley, a bystander, could almost feel the shivers running down her spine. She doesn’t like the feeling festering in her stomach.

Clyde smiled, “I’ll be at the palace tomorrow to give you a proper report. Then, it’s time for you to take your soldiers and brothers and go home as soon as possible. It is a hindrance since there are too many people.” Clyde is the only one who is able to say such things to the king.

However, the king shook his head, “I just got here. I’ve been wanting to meet Miss Ashley. I want to talk a little more.”

‘How scary…’

It’s an honor, but her knees were starting to wobble. She was at the height of her nerves. Oh how she wanted to go back fast and calm herself down under the dark quilt.

As if he knew what was in her mind, Clyde chuckled and said, “Unfortunately, brother, I’ve been so busy up until now that I haven’t even been able to show my face in the palace. Even though we got engaged, we haven’t been able to spend much time together at all.”

Saying this, he pulled Ashley closer. She was taken aback by their sudden degree of closeness also by the fact that the king was in front of them.

‘What is this…!?’ Her heart was screaming, but it was not because she dislikes it. It was just tremendously embarrassing.

She knew that Clyde was trying to get the king to leave early, but her cheeks felt hot. She turned away to hide her red cheeks.

Perhaps surprised by Ashley’s face on his chest, Clyde looked down at her with concern. He seemed to have thought that Ashley was frightened by the situation. However, when he saw her flushed face, he realized that she was not afraid. His surprise slowly crumbled and with a look of genuine happiness, he hugged Ashley as he nuzzled his face into her hair.

It seemed that the one who was more surprised than anyone else at this sight was the king. He was wide-eyed at the sight of his brother smiling with an expression that he had never seen before. Then, he smiled with satisfaction.

He said to his soldiers, “We’re going back.”

“You’ve got to attend the hearing. You will be questioned in detail by others, especially the royal officials. I’m sure you’ll be able to handle it.”

“Very well.”

“That thing will not cause others inconvenience, right?”

He confirms in a sharp tone, “Yes. There will be no such thing.” Clyde nodded.

“I see.” The king let out a small breath, “I shall return to the royal palace. The queen is anxious to see Miss Ashley, you may come visit anytime.”

“Y-yes!” Ashley hurriedly nodded as she was shaken to suddenly speak.

The king left with the soldiers in tow.

‘It’s over…’ Very much relieved, Ashley let out a big exhale. Then,

“Master Clyde!” Hank and Jeanne came running. It seems that Clyde’s younger brothers had also left.

Ashley was startled and hurriedly escaped out of Clyde’s arms. She had no choice earlier since she had to show pretense in front of the king, but now she is free to leave. As she left his arms, he felt disappointed.

“What about the black wolf? What happened to the black wolf?”

When Hank and Jeanne heard that the black wolf had reached the island safely, they had big smiles on their faces as they cheered.

Then, Hank tilted his head in wonder, “Come to think of it, I saw the chief magician in front of the yard and for some reason, Fernan was smiling amusedly as he sent off the carriage of the palace.”

“He was different from his usual demeanor. Both Hank and I were praised. What was going on?”

What really happened? Just before Fernan took the magician away, he looked pale and weary.

In a casual tone, Clyde said, “It must be because of what I asked Fernan to tell the chief magician.”

Ashley, who had nothing related to what he said, was also curious.

“Hank and Jeanne are very good magicians. They listen to my orders very well. I’ll report this to the king soon, so please praise them.”

Ashley was taken aback, it was not a bad report but a good report?

“That’s good isn’t it?” Ashley’s voice was lively, but Hank and Jeanne frowned.

“It contained a cover up in case of emergency, right?”

“If things didn’t work out for the black wolf, the chief magician will report that all of the responsibility lies on the one who ordered it, which is Master Clyde…”

Ashley was stunned. Was that so? Had Clyde already laid the groundwork at that time that Hank and Jeanne wouldn’t be blamed in the event of an emergency?

‘He’s an amazing person…’ She marveled, but at the same time, she would have hated herself if that had been the case. Ashley clasped her hands tightly on either side of her body as her true feelings welled up from the bottom of her heart.

Clyde smiled at Hank and Jeanne, “But we succeeded and I’m so grateful for all of your help, because without you guys, my wish wouldn’t have been fulfilled.”

Then, he looked at Ashley and smiled, “Of course, I’m grateful to Ashley too.”

“It’s not—” her voice choked up and she couldn’t speak. Still, she was able to say, “I’m very glad it all worked out…”

Clyde chuckled as he muttered, “You are right.” He probably didn’t notice the fuzziness in Ashley’s mind.

While she was thinking about what to say, Hank and Jeanne looked up at the sky nostalgically.

“I wonder if the black wolf is looking at this sky right now.” The voice sounded sad.

Ashley looked at them and nodded with a smile to cheer them up, “He’s watching. I’m sure he’s happy.”

With a satisfied face, with a wish fulfilled. As Ashley turned to look up at the sky, her eyes met Clyde’s. His green eyes curved upwards while Ashley returned a smile.
