8 – Childish Mind (3)

Me and Adam hyung took high positions in the mercenary corps as time passed.

No one could object to our promotion.

We made a lot of contributions to support this mercenary corps.

As much as the location is the location, it was also far from the danger front.

I was making money as well.

It was to the point where I thought maybe it would be comfortable to live like this.

We also got to attend the officers’ meeting.

Actually, I didn’t even call it a meeting.

Because alcohol, food and women were always together.

In fact, it could be called an entertainment party.

“Berg! Adam! You’re here. Sit down.”

The Lizardman ‘Malak’, who was the leader, greeted us attending the meeting with women on both sides.

Numerous other officers of different races had already taken their seats.

Brown-brown meat glistening with oil, various side dishes, and expensive alcohol were waiting for us.

Malak pretended to welcome us, but his eyes were always wary towards us.

Of course, we were highly valued for the support of the members, as we were able to secure this position with our skills.

As the general manager, you may have felt threatened.

In addition to that, my brother and I were closely tied together as human beings, so it might have seemed like a faction.

Me and Adam took our seats.

“Oh my…I have to play with this person. He was handsome…”

Then, naturally, a dark elf woman sat down next to me.

I stopped her from trying to cross her flowing arms.

“Don’t touch me.”

Adam hyung almost spit out the alcohol he was drinking.

I didn’t care about the laughing Adam or the bewildered dark elf woman.

I just sipped the free drink in front of me.

The meeting went well.

I always attended meetings and only drank.

Not many people talked to me.

Because I always didn’t show a different reaction.

As it is, obscenity and swear words dominate the space with laughter.

I didn’t share a laugh with them.

I drank alcohol while filling my stomach with meat.

Then, Malak, the leader, opens fire by pointing out Adam.

“Adam. By the way, I heard there was a conflict with the vice-captain in the previous battle.”

My brother was flirting with the woman sitting next to him, and he shrugged at Malak’s point.

“Is there a conflict? It was just a little bit of a plan.”

“Isn’t that what the vice-captain meant?”

“What did the vice-captain say?”

“They said you didn’t listen to orders.”

With Malak’s cold tone, the meeting cools down in an instant.

I quickly realized that Malak wasn’t joking.

I pretend to be drinking and read the mood of the meeting.

It was a familiar feeling.

It felt like being targeted.

Adam hyung reads the mood first and puts down his glass.

“…It’s not that I didn’t obey orders. Things just changed.”

“So you acted your way? Isn’t that disobedience?”

“Circumstances have changed, so we made the best choice. I have separated from the vice-captain, so when do I wait for the vice-captain’s instructions and act again? Didn’t I explain it properly the other day?”

“After listening closely to the vice-captain, it seems that this is not the case again.”

“…”

Adam hyung’s expression, which had a smile on it, gradually hardened.

I also put down my glass after him.

My brother said.

“…Anyway, all of my men survived. I’d like you to give me a prize.”

“Do you think I am just trying to joke?”

Another short silence.

Malak was hanging on his pod.

It seemed like he was trying to keep his older brother in check.

Adam said at last.

“Sorry. Next time, I’ll do my best to obey your orders.”

“That’s not it, Adam. I’ve decided this isn’t going to be taken lightly. Nothing puts allies in danger like disobedience on the battlefield. Punish-“

“After.”

– Bang!

Adam slammed his fist down on the table.

Every officer in the seat pulled back in amazement.

But Adam, who actually took action, looked at me.

“…Berg.”

“…”

“I think it’s about time. Now let’s form our mercenaries. I was seeing an opportunity anyway.”

I nodded, and Adam stood up.

I also stood up after him.

Adam put the smile on his face again and said to Malak.

“Captain. Thank you for the time. I feel like we will continue to fight in the future. In that case, I will leave the mercenary corps.”

Malak digested Adam’s words for a while, and drew his sword in anger.

“Where is this bastard now-“

Numerous officers follow him and put their hands on their swords.

But I drew my sword faster than anyone else.

“-Captain, sit down.”

I pointed the drawn sword at the captain’s neck and warned him.

It was a very strange feeling to point a weapon at the neck of the leader I always followed.

Malak freezes instantly. So did the other officers.

There was a huge difference between those of us who got the officers’ positions purely through strength and the other officers who rose through politics.

In addition to that, we couldn’t be the same as those who drank only alcohol and meat and got away from battle, and we still train every day.

Everybody understood that fact. I could see it just by looking at the body shape.

Adam left first.

I told them to stay alone.

“It’s a breakup anyway, so don’t break up messily, we.”

“…”

I waited for a while, but no one objected.

I put my sword in and followed Adam.

This is something that will come someday. I was expecting it, so I was quick to accept.

I was going to drop all the positions I had and start over, but it didn’t matter.

I also wanted to continue to check what Adam was doing.

In the first place, the current mercenary corps was not a place I wanted to be for the rest of my life.

Nevertheless, Adam said hello without saying anything, perhaps thanking me for following him.

“Thank you, Berg.”

I laughed.

“They pretended to be cool.”

And within a few months, we formed a mercenary corps.

I went through quite a hard time thinking of the name of the mercenary group.

Adam’s suggestions were always stupid.

“The Crimson Sword and Shield.”

“Not much.”

“Hey! Where can I find a name like this…!”

“Please, make it easy. No one will come.”

“Then, should I just use red yeomdan?”

“…It’s better than before.”

It was quite fun to create a mercenary group.

Being able to operate according to the principles we established was our biggest advantage.

“Let’s only accept the human race.”

Adam hyung decided.

“In the first place, when races are mixed, they just fight. We should be able to have each other’s backs.”

Even if he didn’t have to explain, he understood his meaning.

It was not easy to narrow the distance with other races.

Through years of experience, there were things I learned and felt.

In the end, I feel more comfortable with my own people by my side.

Because there are no cultural differences, there are fewer disputes.

Even after considering this and that, there was no reason to accept a different race.

Adam hyung moderately melted his warm personality into the principles of the mercenary corps.

He wanted to form a mercenary group with fewer people dying.

I wanted a mercenary corps in which each member becomes an expert, rather than creating a mercenary corps that catches monsters by force.

According to this, we selected the members after careful consideration.

Physical test, physical test, intelligence test, etc…

All the applicants who seemed to be defeated easily were knocked out.

Even those selected had to go through rigorous training.

He and I put the new recruits through a terrible run.

Especially, I was hated by the members.

But even if I was hated, I didn’t care.

I couldn’t help but feel strangely uncomfortable thinking that their lives were in my hands.

I wanted to do all my responsibilities.

Swordsmanship training, tactical training, survival training, nothing was neglected.

Taught about monsters’ weakness, types, and everything.

My brother naturally started being called the leader, and I was called the vice-captain.

Since we managed the mercenary corps in Adam’s way, the number of casualties has decreased to a point where it is incomparable to the previous mercenary corps.

It was difficult to grow the scale as much as it was difficult to work through and receive applicants, but an unshakable foundation was established.

Except for training, members’ satisfaction was high.

As the survival rate increased, the hatred toward me turned into respect.

Because of this, rumors about our Red Flame Team, which are a bit different from ordinary mercenaries, spread all over the place, and in that way, the scale gradually grew.

As the scale grew, the incoming requests became more dangerous and the higher the reward.

We were able to grow continuously.

I felt a sense of pride as I watched the growth of our hand-made mercenary corps.

When everyone moves as one body and catches monsters with one will, there is no choice but to create a sense of fellowship.

I was happy, even if I didn’t show it, that I had colleagues I could truly rely on, not colleagues who would argue with me every day and change overnight.

Just like that, five more years pass.

I turned 24 years old.

My older brother was 26 years old.

Our prominences have come quite on track.

Many people remember the name of our mercenary group.

Once in a while, requests came in even from nobles.

Adam’s plan to set up a mercenary group could be seen as a success.

One day as I was drinking with his older brother, he smiled and said.

“Didn’t I say my mercenaries would be different?”

I burst into laughter at his words.
