2 – Childhood (2)

I met Xian every three days.

She was always waiting for me at the meeting place first.

She was the one who always waited for me.

I learned many things about her by eating her bread that she brought from her house.

Sien was 9 years old, two years younger than me.

She’s not aristocratic, but she grew up in a wealthy family.

Both of my parents are doctors.

Human councilors were quite rare, so I thought it was unexpected.

As I suggested, she brought her full food every time we met, and I told her that all of that food was secretly brought.

There were also some parts where my expectations of her were different.

Contrary to what I thought she was bright and had many friends, she grew up secretly lonely.

“Am I the only one?”

“Yes. Her only friend is you, Berg.”

On her third meeting, she said shyly.

“I was often sick, so I didn’t have time to make friends.”

“…”

“But when I saw you, I was so angry! Are you doing So I couldn’t miss it.”

“What is Hwaaak?”

From noble mtl dot com

“I don’t know. But it was atrocious.”

She smiled at the fact that she became her friend with me.

Maybe that’s why I didn’t realize that our relationship wasn’t normal.

A friend does not tear food from a friend.

It’s not like I’m just listening without reacting.

It was our relationship where nothing went back and forth, and I only accepted one-sidedly, but Shien always chattered next to me to see if he was satisfied with that.

A story about seeing a small monster somewhere.

The story of shaking hands with a brave werewolf in the next city after following his parents.

The story of seeing the stone statue of a dragon warrior. A story about the demon king who existed 200 years ago.

The story of an old elven chief who looked down on him.

A story about seeing a dwarf of the same height working with jewels.

She had so many interesting stories that I wondered if she had a reason to meet me.

As rich as she was, she seemed to travel a lot.

And whenever I heard her talk, I felt with my skin that there was a huge distance between us.

“How did you travel so much when you were sick?”

“I went because I was sick. I had to move all over the place to heal. It’s okay though. I don’t feel sick these days.”

“…”

“Do you have any interesting stories?”

She shrugged her shoulders at her question.

It wasn’t that she was annoying.

I just had nothing to say.

Because the stories I can tell you aren’t that bright and interesting.

At most, there were stories of fighting with someone, stories of injuries, and stories of Flint and Max fooling around.

Our world was so different.

But Shien kept trying to mix with me.

As a result, there are many things she has to endure to be with me.

A place where we meet once.

We met in a place where people don’t come often, even if it’s not in the slums.

It was all because of me.

I don’t know what it would be like if Xian was by my side, but even if I left the slums, people would point fingers at me and avoid me.

In a way, it’s natural since people from the slums stole so many things in the first place, but there were also many people who were dirty and gross, like cockroaches.

If I crawl out to a bright place with Shien for no reason, I don’t know what will happen to me.

Caught by the village elders, the slum guy might be beaten on the spot for approaching an innocent girl.

So the place we met was a bit messy and dark, but Shien didn’t seem to have any complaints, as if she didn’t care as long as she could be with me.

“Is it delicious?”

On the contrary, it was to the point of worrying about whether the food that went into my mouth was right for my mouth.

“…”

And as time passed, every time I saw her goodness, my conscience pricked me that I didn’t even know existed.

I’m using her for her.

I’m using her favor to make my stomach full.

I don’t think of her as her only friend.

Every time I see her innocent smile, the food doesn’t go down my throat.

Even though the food she brings is softer and tastier than any other food.

In a way, it was natural for me to change while feeling these emotions.

In order to respond to her pure sincerity, I gradually began to consider her as her friend.

After about two months of our unnatural relationship, when we were comfortable with each other, when she stopped taking her food from her, I started sharing her slum pastimes with Shien.

If you’re friends, you’re doing fun things together.

“Come on. I’m watching. Kaak…!”

“Be…Berg…This…Isn’t this a bit mean…”

Through the window of a two-story building, Xian worriedly talks to me as I watch the numerous people passing by in the alleyway.

“…”

Seeing her expression that she is not happy at all, my heart cools down too.

After she spat on the floor without saying a word, I made her wait at her place for a while.

After that, I bring water into a small bowl and try again.

“Come on. Then see you again.”

Instead of saliva, I scooped up water fist by fist and sprayed it down.

“Ouch!”

People passing by looked up in amazement at the water droplets touching their necks, and Shien and I hid behind the window.

Compared to spitting, it was neither fun nor tense, but Shien held her breath as if something big was about to happen and she closed her eyes while holding my hand tightly.

“…”

And seeing her like that, I realized that this is much funnier than spitting on her.

When I look at Xian, a smile leaks out without me realizing it.

“I’m fine now.”

When I said that, Shien opened her eyes and looked up at me.

The street where I pulled out my face again and looked down was full of people laughing at the coolly falling stream of water.

Seeing that they weren’t offended by my prank, Shien then smiled brightly and said,

“This is fun, Berg…!”

As soon as I started to treat her with her sincerity, we became close with her at an unbelievable speed.

We became comfortable with each other’s existence, and it didn’t feel like an unnatural relationship anymore.

Like Max and Flint, she felt like another friend of mine.

We spent a year together like that.

And she declared she was 10 years old.

“Berg! I think just being our friends isn’t enough.”

“What?”

“I don’t know because I don’t have any other friends…we are closer than other friends, aren’t we?”

I wondered if it was like that, and I rolled her head for a while, and it seemed like that again.

“So?”

When I ask her why she said this, she blinks again and avoids her gaze.

She hesitates as she bites her fingers.

It’s her habit that comes out whenever she’s nervous.

“…Let’s be best friends.”

This is what she finally said after spending a long time on her.

I couldn’t understand her hesitation, wondering what the difference was.

“What’s the difference?”

“It’s different…!”

She made a loud noise as if she was momentarily frustrated.

“Everyone, when you become best friends, you have to put me first! Me too…!”

Her As we got closer, I came to tease her often.

For some reason, her earnest appearance is funny and makes me want to joke.

“I don’t intend to be best friends with Manneken.”

“What? Ber-“

“-And I’m the only one who loses. You only have friends anyway.”

“…”

But at that joke, Shien’s expression quickly darkened.

She can’t refute in the slightest, and she wanders around, blinking her eyes.

“Shien?”

“…..”

He couldn’t even answer my call and moved his lips.

Soon she turns around and leaves me.

I grabbed her quickly and patted her as she walked away.

“Hey, Xian…! It’s a joke, why are you like this?”

Did I cross the line? Sometimes forget That she’s not from the slums. She had to level the water level even for pranks.

The lack of friends may have been her weakness.

I told her to comfort her.

“How can I make friends when I am sick-“

“-Do you have someone you are closer to than me?”

But the words that came out of her mouth were different from what I expected.

“What?”

“Do you have a friend who is… more important than me?”

She frowned anxiously, as if she was upset not because she said she had no friends, but because she rejected her offer to be her best friend.

I looked down at her and let out a long sigh.

With her sigh, the tension surrounding us is relieved.

I replied with a smile and no playfulness.

“Let’s be best friends.”

“If you’re lying to relieve your anger-“

“It’s not like that, Shien.”

I was sincere.

Because of her, seeing the world she has never experienced, even I feel brighter.

I’ve been waiting for the day I meet her since someday.

While Max and Flint will be disappointed, I made a choice.

“Let’s be best friends.”

At those simple words, a big smile came across Shien’s lips, and tears welled up in her eyes.

She was overjoyed as she hugged me tightly.

Perhaps at the time, I was ignoring the power of the word best friend.

Contrary to what we thought there would be no big change, we became even closer with the fact that we became best friends.

The frequent encounters were proof of that.

We used to meet every three days, but we started to reduce the duration to two days, one day, and later reached the point of meeting every day.

We ate together, washed together, and joked around a lot.

Max and Flint complained about my behavior, but I didn’t listen.

In my mind, I just thought that I should prioritize my best friend.

I just wanted to meet Xien.

I couldn’t help it.

With her, she was able to escape the gloomy atmosphere of her slums.

Just looking at Shien’s smiling face made her feel like all her worries disappeared.

Just like that, another year passes.

It has been two years since our relationship continued.

It’s been a year since we became best friends.

The year Xian turned 11 and I turned 13…

Sien’s parents died in an accident.

She became an orphan like me.
