I Have a Safari Park

Chapter 568 Only elephants need ivory

Lin Hao couldn't help sighing!

Reminds me of a public service advertisement I once saw.

A female elephant and a baby elephant are walking forward against the sunset on the beautiful grassland.

The baby elephant said happily: "Mom, I have teeth!"

"..."

"Mom, I have teeth!"

The little elephants couldn't wait for their mother's congratulations, and some were just silent, wondering, "Mom, aren't you happy for me?"

Although many years have passed, I still have a deep impression on this public service advertisement.

Elephants choose not to grow tusks in order not to be poached, which is sad and disappointing.

Moreover, elephants do not have tusks, which is not only inconvenient for their own drinking water and food, but also affects other creatures that depend on elephants for their survival.

This invisible impact, I don't know how many years it will take to truly manifest.

Lin Hao continued to look down: "The ivory has fallen off, can it grow back?"

Generally speaking, the two long tusks that are exposed outside are actually the incisors of elephants! In the mouth are the molars.

The outer part is not the whole, a third of which is wrapped in the head.

There are only two ways to get ivory, one is to wait for the elephant to die naturally, and the other is to kill the elephant.

In order to obtain complete ivory, poachers use extremely cruel methods. After killing the elephant, they cut off the head and trunk so that the ivory can be removed. Some elephants are not even fully dead when their tusks are ripped off.

Lin Hao thought of the lifeless elephant lying on the ground, with an ugly big hole brutally cut open on its face, blood constantly lying out, its trunk cut off and thrown on the ground, its tusks taken out, leaving only its huge body gradually. Rotten, flies dance merrily among the flesh.

Just thinking about it makes me shiver, and a nauseating feeling rises in my heart!

The warehouse of the Kenya Wildlife Conservation Service once stored 132 tons of ivory from 12,000 elephants, most of which were killed by poachers.

After visiting, someone expressed this emotion: "As soon as you enter the door, you smell the pungent corpse odor, as if you see a pile of white bones. Seeing such a scene, you will never want to buy ivory and put it at home and wear it on your body. Because you would find it so cruel and ominous."

There was no authoritative statistical data on the number of elephants before, but people from all walks of life agree that the number of African elephants dropped sharply from 1.3 million to less than 500,000 in the 1970s and 1980s, and there are even reports that it is less than 40. Ten thousand.

This is equivalent to about a hundred elephants dying every day.

Elephant populations are at risk of extinction due to poaching and the ivory trade.

The next question is, is the ivory going to be destroyed?

There is an idea that African countries have a lot of stockpiles of ivory, and destruction is a waste. If the ivory trade is legalized and there are regular channels to sell ivory, will it be able to combat poaching? The money from the sale of ivory can also be invested in the conservation of elephants.

But the ideal is beautiful, the reality is cruel.

Elephant poaching and black market smuggling have grown substantially since the opening of the legal trade in ivory.

The legal trade stimulates consumer demand for ivory, and the mix of legal and illegal makes enforcement difficult.

Therefore, the legal ivory trade case was not passed, and countries around the world have destroyed 300 tons of ivory stocks.

Embarrassingly, China is the world's largest consumer of ivory, and ivory has become a status symbol for the rich.

But China is also acting.

The sign at the end reads: "From January 1, 2018, my country has completely stopped processing and selling ivory and its products, and has completely banned the ivory trade. It is illegal to buy and sell ivory products.

Only elephants need and have the right to ivory! "

After Lin Hao watched the exhibition card, his blood boiled, especially the last sentence, which was sonorous and powerful, and could not wait to shout.

The children next to me are also watching the display card carefully!

In the lower part, a cartoon display board is prepared for the children. In the form of character dialogue, the children are told to reject the ivory trade.

An adult said "Ivory is a symbol of good taste" and a child said "I prefer them alive".

"I didn't kill the elephant." "Even though you didn't kill it, buying ivory means supporting the killing!"

Lin Hao walked around the elephant viewing hut after reading the ivory display.

When I saw a tourist, I didn't know what to look at behind the door, I was a little curious.

Is there a sign behind the door? Who is watching from the back?

When the people left, I went to take a look.

There was no sign on it, so he used black charcoal to write a limerick: "Reporters can't get money for interviews, and elephant disasters come year after year. When the decree arrives, it's better to kill an elephant for the New Year!"

Between the lines, there is a deep hatred for elephants, the helplessness of being oppressed by elephants and unable to live!

This hatred was about to pop out of the door.

Lin Hao, who was caught off guard, was like a thunderbolt in the clear sky, and it was as if someone had hit him with a sap.

Subconsciously, he looked at a sign next to him.

The ivory display card just now talked about the greedy people's thirst for beautiful ivory, which led to the cruel poaching of elephants, and this display card is about the more complicated human-elephant conflict.

First, tell some stories of human-elephant conflict.

In 2015, a family in Xishuangbanna was playing mahjong with the baby next to it. Suddenly, an elephant rushed towards their house and knocked down the house. All four were injured. Fortunately, someone saw the elephant coming and took the baby away, otherwise I don't know what to do.

During the project in the Wild Elephant Valley in Xishuangbanna, Professor Zhang, an authority on elephant research, led the students to do a project. A proprietress was in charge of cooking for the students. On a rainy day, the proprietress went out and encountered wild elephants and was trampled to death by elephants.

In the 28 years from 1988 to 2016, 68 people were trampled to death by elephants in Xishuangbanna, Pu'er and other places, 320 people were injured by elephants, and agricultural losses exceeded 30 billion yuan.

For fellow villagers, elephants are undoubtedly a hidden danger in life. They are afraid of encountering elephants when they go out, and they are afraid that the crops they have planted so hard will be ruined by elephants. This limerick was written by a fellow villager at Chaimen when Professor Zhang was doing research in Pu'er.

The tragedy is not only for humans, 80 elephants were also killed during this period.

In 2016, two baby elephants passed by the village and died by mistakenly eating crops that had been treated with pesticides. The elephant group lingered in front of the bodies of the two baby elephants for several days, and the screams resounded through the valley.

The gestation period of elephants is as long as 22 months, and each litter can only give birth to one head. It can only regenerate at an interval of five or six years.

The death of the baby elephants made the elephants extremely violent, and they were hostile to humans for a period of time, creating a lot of panic in the local area.

In another family, the daughter-in-law of the family came out to go to the toilet when an elephant came into the yard. Seeing that he was about to rush past, the man quickly came out and shot the elephant with a shotgun. The shot just hit the vulnerable spot behind the female elephant's ear, killing her directly.

The mother elephant is still pregnant, and the elephant herd is going to die of anger. Afraid of retaliation by the elephant herd, the fellow had to report to the police and was arrested for illegally possessing firearms.
