Exploiting Hollywood 1980

Chapter 749: tacit understanding

Perhaps Jennifer Gray and Patrick Swaytz had a heart-to-heart chat in the room.

From the second day onwards, the cooperation between the two was very tacit.

There are many rival scenes where only two people are in the camera, especially chemical reactions are required.

Judging from the reaction on the spot, Jennifer always looked at Patrick with affection in her eyes, and no matter what she did or danced, she seemed to be sending out a signal of love.

And Patrick also changed his disgust for Jennifer's poor dance skills, and really replaced the mentality of a dancer who danced with guests.

"whee……"

In the holiday cabin that was originally prepared for the Boy Scouts, it has been transformed into a simple room for dancers.

Although it is simple, it is very clean, with white sheets, neat floors, and chores neatly packed. At first glance, Johnny who lives here is a man who has plans for his future.

Patrick stood behind Jennifer, raised her hand, and stroked Jennifer's arm and underarm with the back of his hand.

Jennifer Gray was very ticklish, and the slightest touch made her laugh out loud.

Patrick had no choice but to show the helplessness of a lover. Although he really despised the clumsiness of this Jewish girl, he always treated her with the utmost patience.

"Dancing is not only about the steps, but also about your heart."

Patrick took Jennifer's hand and put it on his chest.

"Click, click, do you hear it? Follow the rhythm of your heartbeat."

"Hmm..." Jennifer nodded vigorously, and gradually her dance steps began to become smoother.

   "Cut!"

As Ronald stopped, everyone in the audience began to applaud.

   "Wow wow..."

"It was a great performance." The screenwriter Eleanor covered her cheeks with her hands, and was almost moved to tears.

Ronald waved, letting assistant director Emile lead the lighting for the next scene.

He hurried to his exclusive director's chair, picked up the thermos cup and drank a cup of wolfberry black tea.

My own investment, the feeling of shooting is different. Trying to make the best of everything within a limited budget, Ronald's mental energy is a bit too much.

Although his body can still support his work for more than ten hours a day, his mental exhaustion still gives him a chance to sit down and rest.

He also took out a copy of "Confucius' Teachings" from his bag and began to change his mind.

"Acquiring knowledge, and putting it into practice as it continues to be acquired, is truly a joy..."

Indeed, my control over the director is getting stronger every day. Referencing directing skills, casting roles, and figuring out the audience's preferences and avoiding certain sensitivities of social thought, Ronald had a lot of fun doing this.

"Okay, we can take the next shot."

Assistant director Emil came to report.

"Clear." Ronald put down the book and issued the order.

All the idlers and others left the room.

Screenwriter Eleanor looked at Ronald, "I'm going out too?"

"You can ask Jennifer if she would like to have you there when she makes out with the handsome single-eyed guy she loves." Ronald laughed. …

The screenwriter Eleanor is good at everything, and has done a lot of consulting work for the crew outside of her responsibilities.

But she just likes to be in the mentality of Baby, and likes to watch Jennifer Gray play her younger self on the scene and rub shoulders with Patrick Swayze.

"Okay", Eleanor knew that she was going to make an intimacy scene, and one more person would hinder the performance of the actors, "But I want to watch the demo with you."

   Ronald nodded in agreement.

The scene was very quiet. There were only director Ronald, the director of photography, a lighting engineer, and a sound engineer. They were all people who couldn’t be simplified any more.

Jennifer Gray, in old-fashioned white underwear, walked in.

"You brew for a while, and when you feel that the mood is in place, tell me, I am not called Action, and we will start when you give me a signal."

Jennifer Gray was still a little shy, she nodded and sat on the white sheet.

Ronald turned his head and saw Swayze, who was shirtless and showed his sturdy body. He waved his hand quickly to let him come over, put his hand to his mouth again, and made a small gesture.

Intimacy scenes are a big burden for any actor. An actor is a profession that exposes his inner emotions to the camera. And intimacy scenes are the most private and vulnerable part of a person. It is best not to give orders loudly in such scenes, so that the good emotions that have been brewed with great difficulty will be scared away.

Gray finally sent a signal to Ronald after ten minutes.

Ronald signaled the DP with his eyes to turn on the camera, and the sound engineer raised the recording rod above the bed.

Grey pulled back the white quilt, where Swayze was already waiting for her.

Jennifer Grey hugs Swayze, showing her smooth back.

The close-up shot needs to shoot the scenes of the two protagonists, which are very close. The camera's shot was just a foot away from the pair. Gray is very brave, as if the camera and the people are not there, and the scene is very ambiguous.

"Cut!" Ronald called out softly, then gave Gray a thumbs up that this was a good one.

"Hee hee..." Gray shrank on the bed, got into the quilt, then put on the blanket and came out to drink water and rest.

"Make up, hair, come in and touch up." Ronald yelled.

There are a lot of scenes to be filmed in this hut.

Next up is Cynthia Rhodes' abortion scene.

Baby learned of Penny's predicament, so she went back to her father, Dr. Hausman, and asked for a few hundred dollars, which was still very valuable at the time, and secretly gave it to Penny, and asked her to hire an "underground doctor" to secretly give it to her. Do the surgery yourself.

Because the Supreme Court had not passed the "Roe v. Wade case" at that time, it was illegal in New York State, and only a "doctor" with a dirty scalpel could be found.

After Penny's surgery, she has a fever, lower abdominal pain, and her whole body is not well.

In order to save people,   Baby had to ask his father, Dr. Hausman, to save Penny.

Dr.   Hausman was kind-hearted and saved Penny. But I was very dissatisfied that my daughter borrowed money for Johnny, a gangster, to use it for his girlfriend's surgery.

   "Action!"

The front headlights with maximum power were used on the scene, shining brightly on the face of Penny played by Cynthia Rhodes.

This time Ronald told the makeup artist not to apply makeup to Cynthia. …

When illuminated by the headlights like this, the face without powder will become a bit sick and pale.

The camera moved forward slowly, Cynthia was lying there, covering her stomach with her hands, and the water droplets that had been sprinkled on her forehead beforehand flowed down her neck, as if she was in a cold sweat.

   "Cut!"

Ronald turned to the director of photography who called to stop.

Usually, it's not that the director has to stop, but there is some technical problem that has to stop. For example, it is found that the film is not loaded, or the tape recorder is broken and has not recorded a technical failure such as a synchronous sound.

"Cynthia's face is still too good-looking", the director of photography motioned Ronald to frame the view for himself.

"Huh?" Ronald quickly walked behind the camera, "Didn't you let me make up?"

Sure enough, when I looked in the viewfinder, Cynthia Rhodes's face was white and flushed, looking like a natural beauty.

Ronald went to the window and stared at Cynthia's skin for a long time, the complexion of her face and neck was exactly the same. Ronald took her hand and rolled up her sleeves, finding that the colors were similar.

"You really don't have makeup on", Ronald couldn't help but be amazed. It is really rare for an actor to maintain this level of skin under the light without makeup. Maybe it has something to do with Cynthia's insistence on dancing.

"Make up, give her an ugly make-up." Ronald called the makeup artist and explained his request.

The makeup artist went up and applied a pale foundation in a few strokes.

"Well, yes, we actually shot it."

The director of photography was satisfied with the makeup.

   "Action!"

Cynthia lay down and acted in distress. Dr. Hausman held her hand, gave her a patient consultation, and asked everyone to go out to give Penny another examination.

Ronald is standing behind the camera, watching the scene.

The lines were requested by Ronald, and Eleanor had been revised. Just looking at their performances and lines, most people would really not be able to imagine what kind of surgery this was an accident.

The performances of several actors were excellent, and Ronald had the camera on during the first rehearsal. The intense emotions needed for that episode, which had not experienced any formal performances, were shown.

This trick taught by Jonathan Demme is really useful. Especially in this kind of film that focuses on the inner interaction of the characters, it is completely worthwhile to spend a little more money on film.

If it is an action scene, then you should spend more time on rehearsal, and wait until you have a set of tricks before the actual shooting.

There is no one trick that can handle all movies, and Ronald is constantly learning.

Penny was lying on the bed, and Dr. Hausman called everyone and told them that Penny was no longer in danger, then called out Baby alone, let her go with him, and refused Johnny to see him off.

also taught him that he must know how to be responsible when doing things.

This scene has been performed, and the next scene will have to be re-lighted, moved the camera, and will be shot in two hours.

I don't know why Ronald didn't stop calling after everyone finished the performance. When the actor was about to look back at the camera, Director Ronald, was there any problem?

   "Cut!"

Ronald shouted stop and announced a break. …

Everyone thought it was the effect that Ronald needed, but they didn't ask.

   Actually, Ronald was distracted.

Cynthia was lying on the bed, but her feet were still tightly together and her toes were straight, which was completely different from the sleeping position of ordinary people.

This is a conditioned reflex of doing dance training from a young age over many years. Whether sitting, lying or walking, there is a dancer's demeanor that pays attention to their posture.

Many years later, when I saw this sleeping position again, Ronald could only smile to himself. After the camera crew moved the camera to a new shooting location, he was satisfied with the view before going to dinner.

Baby went out of the cabin with his father, Mr. Hausman. She knew her father had misunderstood Johnny (actually Penny was carrying the waiter's child, but the bond between father and daughter had been broken.

Mr.   Hausman began to intervene in the life of his youngest daughter, Baby, and he ordered her not to have any contact with these "bad influences" in the future.

Afterwards, Johnny was having an affair with Baby, who had sneaked over, and was seen by Vivian, the lady who also made Penny pregnant.

Vivian seduces Johnny, because the existence of Baby fails, she reports Johnny as a thief who steals expensive bags.

As a result, although there was no evidence in the report, it was found that Johnny and Baby had an affair, and the hotel owner who also wanted his son to marry Baby was fired.

Johnny lost his job and couldn't continue his relationship with Baby. Had to drive away, the two embraced each other and wished each other good luck. In the song "She is like the wind" sung by Switz herself, the lovers were still separated by the obstacles of reality.

The relationship between   Baby and his father Mr. Hausman also hit rock bottom. He was very dissatisfied with his daughter and this group of "bad influences" who had been very close, and her daughter lied to herself in order to cover Johnny, and loaned him a few hundred dollars.

Dr. Hausman felt that the daughter he liked more had changed. It seems that she is no longer the empathetic daughter who can communicate with her.

   "Cut!"

These second acts have been filmed, and the plot has progressed to the third act, which is impossible to reverse. All the contradictions are superimposed here, and it is about to quickly run to the end.
