Chapter 2: Quarrel

April, the season of spring. It was a good time.

The Z-Grand Games arrived as scheduled and proceeded in an orderly fashion under the guidance of the Student Council.

Students in all departments, classrooms, and laboratories gathered on the sports field. There were people everywhere and the scene was very lively.

A female voice shouted from the speaker. “Students who are participating in the girls 400-meter run should report to the right side of the playground.”

Chang Chuansi stood up from the stands. Her roommates: Xu Jiu, Chen Huiran and Su Yu excitedly cheered for her, but their bodies remained still and they didn’t even bother to move their butts from their seats.

“We can see more clearly by sitting on the stands.” Chen Huiran held the parasol and shamelessly said.

“Huiran is right.” Su Yu seconded the statement.

“Huiran is right.” Xu Yi also agreed and shyly smiled. “The sun is too strong and it’s hot.”

“Fake sisterhood.” Chang Chuansi sighed and picked up her number plate to pin on her body. She took off her coat and strode down the stands towards where the roll-call was being held.

On the form, she signed her name. Chang Chuansi stood at the starting point like the other girls to stretch and warm up her muscles and bones.

At the end of April in the south, one couldn’t say it was hot or cold. Being under the sun was what made it really hot.

Chang Chuansi was only wearing a white short-sleeved T-shirt with a pair of black leggings. It was a simple attire. The hem of her shirt rose up as she stretched her hands to one side which revealed a slender waist. The paleness of her skin was especially dazzling in the sun.

Chu Hao rushed over and reached out to pull down the hem of her clothes. He frowned slightly. “Why are you wearing so little?”

Chang Chuansi stood up straight and glanced at the bright sun. She was a little confused, “I’m going to run 400 meters later. It’s going to be even hotter once I run.”

The referee shouted from the side: “Ready-“

Chu Hao didn’t say much more and watched her walk to the runway.

Loud gunfires suddenly rang out and the people on the runway rushed forward one by one.

The whole audience looked at them in eagerness, but Chu Hao’s eyes only cared to follow one figure, Chang Chuansi.

After running, Chang Chuansi only had one thought in her mind: to control her breathing rate and look at the back of the person in front of her. She kept accelerating her feet and managed to surpass her…

“First place is No. 15703, second place No. 15409…”

Chang Chuansi was the first to rush across the finish line. She stood in place and held her knees to catch her breath. The referee’s voice in her ear became a little unclear. It was only one lap but she was already sweating all over.

Chu Hao held her arm to straighten her up and helped her put on her coat.

“When did you pick up my coat?” Chang Chuansi was a little surprised.

“Not long after you started running. I asked Chen Huiran to throw it to me from the stands.” Chu Hao pulled her forward, “don’t stand still after running.”

Chu Hao didn’t sign up for any of the activities because he wasn’t very enthusiastic about sports and Chang Chuansi only applied for the 400 meter run. After the race, the two of them walked around the field, then Chu Hao followed her to the award ceremony.

The Student Council set up a staggered platform on the stands this time for the awards. Chang Chuansi stood on the highest step and chatted with the girls who came in second and third. She could always quickly get along with others.

The teachers were followed by the girls from the Etiquette Department with trays in their hands. They wore light pink cheongsams which outlined their beautiful figures, their long legs would be exposed from the slit as they walked. It was both vivid and stimulating.

""

Cheng Kexia saw Chu Hao waiting on the side. His slender neck was getting straighter and straighter, like the neck of a proud swan. Her dissatisfaction with Chang Chuansi’s certificate on the tray she was holding disappeared a little. She began to only pay attention to whether or not her appearance was beautiful.

She looked at the t-shirt and leggings Chang Chuansi was wearing that showed none of her figure. On the one hand, she sneered at Chu Hao for being blind. She was standing right beside Chang Chuansi, but he still couldn’t see who looked better?

Cheng Kexia forgot about one important thing: beauty was in the eyes of the beholder. Chu Hao saw Chang Chuansi as his lover, so naturally, anything looked good on her no matter what.

The teacher picked up the certificate and handed it to Chang Chuansi. They smiled lightly and said. “Congratulations.”

“Thank you, teacher.” Chang Chuansi bent over to receive it, then looked at Cheng Kexia with a smile: “Thank you too, my classmate.”

Cheng Kexia’s face became a little stiff.

She wasn’t tall at all. Even if she wore high heels, she still couldn’t compare with Chang Chuansi, who was 170cm tall and standing on a podium at a height of 30 centimeters.

Damn it, she lost power because of height.

Chang Chuansi didn’t know Cheng Kexia was having this internal battle, even if she knew she might not have even cared.

She took the certificate, stepped off the stage and jumped towards Chu Hao. The two of them walked away talking and laughing.

———

“Where are you?”

Chang Chuansi talked into the phone and frowned, “I’m already at the theatre entrance.”

“What theatre?” On the other end of the phone, Chu Hao’s eyebrows knitted together. Because he was coding all night, his reactions were a bit slow and it took him a while to think. “《No Survivors》? Didn’t I tell you that I’m going to catch up on my homework these past two days? The teacher wants it tomorrow so I can’t accompany you to watch the play.”

“Did you tell me?” Chang Chuansi smiled angrily. “Did you tell me in your dream? Look at our chat history. Last night, I said that I’ll go to the cinema to find you after finishing the market research with my classmates. You answered me with an ‘okay’.”

Chu Hao opened the chatting app as she instructed, “I thought I told you that I was tired recently so I didn’t pay attention to what you were saying.”

“So you didn’t see what I sent at all and just replied with the word ‘okay’?”

“It’s my fault. Don’t be so aggressive.” Chu Hao took a deep breath and closed his eyes. His head hurt from all that coffee, “I don’t want to quarrel with you. Calm down first.”

With that, he hung up the phone.

Chang Chuansi stood at the gate of the theatre while holding her phone at 7 in the evening. She was stood up and hung up on by her boyfriend.

The evening wind in early summer was not very hot. Chang Chuansi calmed down after a while and looked at the time displayed on her phone screen. There was still five minutes till the play. She opened up the QR code for the ticket and turned to enter the theatre. She scanned the ticket and found a seat.

If it weren’t for his face, Chang Chuansi wouldn’t have agreed to Chu Hao’s confession. In the past six months of dating, she could very clearly see the differences between the two.

The actors on the stage were engaged in the performance. Chang Chuansi sat in the stand, shrouded in darkness. Her mind was becoming calmer and calmer.

Chang Chuansi recalled half a year ago.

After the end of the art festival, the Student Council organised a KTV party. The chairman of the Student Council and people from the various departments were gathered in the big room, which made it particularly lively.

Chang Chuansi sat with her classmates in the External Relations Department and laughed. They watched the head of the External Relations Department sing with the microphone.

“Sisi, are you going to sing?”

Chang Chuansi shook her head because she was tone deaf.

When the girl sitting next to her saw her refuse, she went up to grab the department head’s microphone for herself. “Department leader, it’s better for you to not occupy the microphone anymore, I also want to sing…”

Chang Chuansi watched the excitement and picked up a large bag of crisps off the table. She ate them with relish.

The sofa beside her sank and she turned her head to look over.

The Student Council—no—a well-known figure in the whole school, Chu Hao sat down next to her.

Chang Chuansi had little contact with him, she just thought he had no place to sit and sat down here. She handed the crisps in her hand to him and politely asked: “Would you like to eat some?”

Chu Hao shook his head.

Chang Chuansi withdrew her hand and continued to watch the others have fun.

As for the heartthrob beside her, Chang Chuansi wasn’t interested at all. Many girls already liked him so she wouldn’t join in the fun.

Chu Hao sat next to her and was silent for a while. He began to find topics to converse with Chang Chuansi about.

Chang Chuansi was not an introvert, so naturally, she chatted with him.

“If there’s anything wrong with your computer, you can come to me and I’ll help you fix it.” Chu Hao was also well-known for his grades in Computer Science.

“Okay.” Chang Chuansi smiled gratefully but she didn’t take his words to heart and politely replied. “If you want to buy any investments, I can also help you.”

Chu Hao nodded and they went silent again.

The dim light concealed his red ears. He did some mental preparation and tried to maintain his usual calm appearance, “Chang Chuansi, can you be my girlfriend?”

Chang Chuansi suddenly understood at that moment, why so many people who she had no contact with would suddenly talk to her, or why the school beau—who had tons of girls chasing after him—came to her.

She took a glance at the lively chairman and department heads laughing and gave Chu Hao, who was still nervously looking at her an, “okay.”

Chang Chuansi said it lightly, like she was agreeing to a joke.

Their relationship began like a “Dare” game 1.

If Chang Chuansi really considered it seriously, she would have never considered Chu Hao.

Not to mention the differences in their family backgrounds, their personalities were actually not very suitable either. Chu Hao was cold and had been sought after since childhood. If he wanted something, then he just had to open his mouth. He was more used to receiving than giving. Whereas she, a finance student, had a mind full of numbers and benefits. Before giving anything, she would weigh if the benefits were 3x more. So in reality, she wasn’t too invested in the relationship.

But it was good like this too, it would be a good meeting and a good parting. A game of truth or dare also had a time limit, now it was time. Chang Chuansi cleared her thoughts after figuring it out and then released a breath of relief. She concentrated on watching the play.

After the end of the show, Chang Chuansi came outside to buy ice cream and took a taxi back to the dormitory.

A week later, day after day, the “C” Language Course in the Computer Science Department finally ended. The students who were forced to rush through more than a week’s worth of homework and had to redo their work before handing in the final draft, could finally feel relieved.

“It’s finally over.” Ji Haoyu greeted his roommate. “Let’s go to Tianjie for a good meal this evening. I’m about to be sick from eating the takeaways in the school.”

Chen Xu looked at Chu Hao and jokingly said, “Chu Cao won’t go. He’s finally finished, he’ll probably go to his girlfriend first. Do you think everyone’s like me and you, single dogs?”

Chu Hao looked at his phone and his expression wasn’t very good. Their chat history stopped a week ago and has not been updated since.

There was a little voice in his heart: “It’s been a week. She should be calm now?”

(Chang Chuansi: I have calmed down, but your girlfriend is also calm down and gone.) 2

Chu Hao clicked on Chang Chuansi’s profile picture and it showed that she had updated her moments several times. She went to the zoo with her roommates and had dinner with the External Relations Department…

It seemed that she was living a very wonderful life.

Chu Hao looked at it and smiled angrily. She was having a very flavourful life.

He put down his phone and asked his roommates: “Let’s go, I’m going, where are we going to eat?”

Ji Haoyu laughed and ran to him. “You’re not going to find your girlfriend?”

Teng Xianyun couldn’t help but wink at him. Even blind people could tell there was something wrong.

“You haven’t seen each other for more than a week-“

Finally, Chen Xu covered Ji Haoyu’s mouth and laughed. “How about Huang Niu restaurant? Let’s go eat hot pot.”

Chu Hao nodded without any objections.

Final exams weren’t that far away and most of the students in the school had already entered the intensive studying and preparation stage. Chu Hao turned over his book and picked up his phone from time to time to look at it.

Nothing new.

He put down his phone and continued to read.

Two minutes later, he picked up his phone again after not reading a single word in the book.

Two weeks have passed. Chu Hao sometimes wondered if Chang Chuansi wanted to see who could hold it out longer.

His moments had a little red dot and so did Chang Chuansi’s profile picture. She posted on moments again.

Chu Hao clicked on it and Chang Chuansi had uploaded some photos. It was of her and a group of people having dinner. In addition to her roommates, there were two boys he didn’t recognise.

They sat a little close to her.

Chu Hao couldn’t help but return to their DMs and sent a message to Chang Chuansi first.

【 ch(Chu Hao): What are you doing? 】

After half a day, Chu Hao looked at his phone for the nth time but it was still quiet with no news.

He checked his network three times. Whether it was the wireless network in the dormitory or data, both of which had good signals. There was no such thing as not receiving messages when there was a good connection.

So it’s just that Chang Chuansi didn’t message him back.

Chu Hao sent another text.

【 ch: Are you still angry? 】

It wasn’t long after this one was sent before Chang Chuansi returned one.

【 44(Si Si) 3 : Sorry, I didn’t see the message until now, I’m eating. 】

Her tone was very polite and unfamiliar.

Chu Hao suddenly panicked and typed quickly.

【 ch: Sorry, I was wrong last time. I thought I had told you, but instead, I had you wait at the theater for me. 】

【 44: It doesn’t matter. I went to see it by myself afterwards. 】

【 ch: I’m done now. Want to go to the cinema tomorrow weekend? Spider-Man was just released. 】4

【 44: No, I have an appointment with Xu Jiu and the others to go study at the library tomorrow. 】

Chu Hao pursed his lower lip and thought about it. He saw her send another message.

【 44: I think it’s better for us to keep a proper distance from each other. After all, we’ve broken up. Don’t ask me out for things like watching movies. 】

【 ch: ???? When did we break up? 】

【 44: Oh, you told me to calm down and then hung up on me. Isn’t that the decent and implicit way to break up for adults? 】

Chu Hao could only feel anger rushing to his head. Fuck the way adults broke up.

“Ji Haoyu, do you have Su Yu on WeChat?” Chu Hao asked his roommate next to his bed. “Give me her contact information, I have something to ask her.”

Ji Haoyu, who was immersed in a sea of questions, suddenly paused and said, “oh, okay.”

Chang Chuansi sent that message and saw that the other party had not replied after a long time, so she put down her phone and continued to eat.

There was not much movement on the table of dishes. Chen Huiran flirted with her boyfriend, Hong Yang and he whispered responses back. Xu Jiu also chatted with Hong Yang’s friend and Su Yu was glued to her phone. Chang Chuansi could guess that she was either looking at her “husband” or chatting with other “wives” (fans).

Chang Chuansi let go to eat her fill. Anyway, it was Hong Yang’s treat. If she didn’t eat then it would be dumb.

When everyone left the restaurant, Chen Huiran drove her boyfriend and his friend back first. Then, she slowly walked back to the dormitory together with Chang Chuansi, Xu Yi and Su Yu. She couldn’t hold herself back from scolding her. “Look at you, you did nothing but eat. To others who know you, they’ll think you’re trying to kill the person treating you. To others who don’t know you, they’ll think that you’ve been starved.”

Chang Chuansi shook Chen Huiran’s arm and acted coquettishly. “Your boyfriend ordered so many dishes and you didn’t eat much. In the end, if it wasn’t finished then wouldn’t it be a waste of Hong Yang’s money?”

“Then do you want me to thank you?” Chen Huiran felt that it was funny. “Alright, when we pass by the pharmacy, I’ll buy you some digestion pills. It’s my treat.”

“The four words: ‘beautiful and is kind-hearted’ 5 are describing you: Chen Mei Shan 6 ” Chang Chuansi had a bright smile and even jokingly gave Chen Huiran a new nickname.

As soon as they walked out of the street, they saw Chu Hao. He was smoking by the side of the road. It seemed like he had been waiting for a while.

The smoke blurred his face and they couldn’t see his expression clearly. He snuffed out the cigarette and walked towards them.

Xu Yi was surprised and asked Chang Chuansi, “Chu Hao smokes? He looks like a good student…”

“I’m seeing this for the first time too.” Chang Chuansi whispered and looked at Chu Hao coming over. She couldn’t help but stand up straighter.

Chu Hao glanced at the hand that Chang Chuansi put on Chen Huiran’s arm and looked away. “I’m here for Sisi.”

Su Yu pushed Xu Jiu who was stunned. “Oh! Let’s go.”

Chen Huiran also pulled out her arm knowingly, “Sisi is a little full. Take her around on a walk and then buy her some digestion pills. We’ll go back to the dormitory first.”

The three of them retreated quickly and Chang Chuansi was left standing in place as she watched their backs.

Chu Hao approached her and grabbed her hand. He took Chang Chuansi along the side of the road.

Chang Chuan thought about pulling her hand away for a moment, but finally gave up when all of her ten-fingers were tightly gripped. She just let him do what he wanted.

“I didn’t want to break up.” Chu Hao opened his mouth. He bent his arms to have her rest her arms on his.

Chang Chuansi let him move her around. “You ignore me for weeks, being cold and aggressive?”

“I was just busy trying to finish off the class…” Chu Hao paused and suddenly felt that no matter how much he tried to explain, it wouldn’t be better than an apology. “I’m sorry.”

“And you say that I’m aggressive.”

“I’m sorry but I don’t know what else to say.”

Chu Hao stopped and Chang Chuansi looked at him.

“Sisi, don’t be angry with me anymore, or else I’ll fail the exam at the end of the semester.” Chu Hao sighed and raised his hand to rub her cheek. The distance between the two of them closed. The yellow street lights made the lines on his face softer.

Chang Chuansi felt like her brain had suddenly turned into paste, “I’m not angry.”

Chu Hao raised the corners of his mouth. His eyebrows and smile spread. He lowered his head and kissed her.

Chang Chuansi clutched the material of his shirt at the waist. His mouth felt soft and there was only one thought left in her head: the honey-trap worked again.

The author has something to say:

The male protagonist has the kind of handsome face you often find on the internet saying you’ll forgive him once you look at him. (Of course, us sisters7 still have to resist the temptation, because you need to have principles and a bottom line.)

Footnotes

The ‘dare’ from Truth or Dare. Basically Chuansi still thinks that the reason why they are dating is or well Chu Hao confessing is because he was dared to. Kame: But in reality. He just likes her~fufufu This is 常川思:冷静好了,你女朋友也冷静没了。”Chángchuān sī: Lěngjìng hǎole, nǐ nǚ péngyǒu yě lěngjìng méiliǎo.:  Basically this is like one of those comments/thoughts of people shown in dramas. Where things aren’t what the person is actually thinking about. Basically Chu Hao’s like “she probably is calmed down now? But in reality, Chuansi is calm, but she’s also calm down to the point that their relationship is over. Like your gf is cool down and poof gone haha. In Mandarin, the number 4(四Sì) has the same pinyin as Chuansi’s nickname “Sisi”. So this is Sisi replying Kame: Yoooo humansss, Spiderman’s No way home is out ahhhh. This is perfect timing. Sorry Fairy. I just need to put this here. 人美心善Rén měi xīn shàn: Basically an idiom ish to describe how a person is beautiful and is also kind-hearted.陈美善Chénměishàn: 陈Chén is Huiran’s last name, 美善měishàn is basically combining ‘beautiful美’ and ‘kind善’ together as if it’s their name, but is just describing them. In Chinese culture, “sisters”/姐妹们Jiěmèimen is used to show familiarity or closeness to other females
