Red that was all Dante could see. His hair, body and clothes all died red. The walls the ceilings all were covered in a crimson red. A blade stained just like the hand that wields it. Faces form in the sea of red constricting, smothering. war cries and pleading echo until all that remain were screams.

Dante woke up screaming with a light head and sweat soaked clothes. He stumbled out of bed before reaching the bathroom and throwing up in the toilet all that came out of his mouth was bile. "That was the third time this night" Dante thought miserably as he kneeled slumped over the toilet bowl gasping for air. Birds cawed at the dawn of a new day as the haggard Dante slowly walked out of his room.

Ferdinand yawned and stretched as he woke to the call of birds finding it unable to fall back asleep again. He slipped out of his wife's embrace and put on a gown and walked down towards the dining room.

As Ferdinand entered the dining room to find the light on stepping cautiously he silently crept forwards. Walking through the doorway he found an odd sight a child climbing upon a chair reaching into various cupboards until he heard a triumphant whisper "ah coffee the lifeblood of overworked staff and insomniacs." Seeing the child pour ground coffee into the filter whispering and muttering to himself like a conspirator hatching a plan oblivious to the world would have been amusing if it wasn't his own child. "Now all we need is water" the tiny conspirator said as he dragged the jug over to the tap filling it up. Ferdinand watched as the jug was about to fall going to help just to find the person in front of him flinching at his presence and reaching into his pocket only to find something not there. "Looking for this Dante" Ferdinand said waving the sheathed switch blade in front of his face. Ferdinand saw the aghast look on his child's face which was plagued by dark circles under his eyes.

"Why the fuck do you have that?" Dante demanded as he absentmindedly let Ferdinand take the jug filled with water.

"To answer why the fuck I have this perhaps I should ask why the fuck you got this thing to begin with?" Ferdinand asked as he switched the coffee machine on.

"I-" Dante started before going quite.

"Were you feeling alone, powerless and scared?" Ferdinand questioned.

"Who wouldn't in that situation no one has a get out of jail free card and I can't use my surname to go through life I am either my own man or a dead one " Dante stated his eyes looking a little less dead.

"I'm seeing dead people" Dante laughed in a self mocking tone as he gazed over Ferdinand's shoulder avoiding eye contact.

"Want me to get the therapist or the exorcist?" Ferdinand joked.

"Which ever one that'll put me out of my misery first" Dante said with a yawn.

They both stood in silence as the rich smell of coffee came out of the machine. Ferdinand stood there trying to find something to say whilst Dante stood there too tired to say anything. For awhile they stood like that until Ferdinand went to get two mugs. "Do you think you did something wrong?" Ferdinand said as he poured coffee into both mugs.

Dante thought about it for a moment before replying "no I don't believe I did anything wrong he was saying he would kill me and if one kills he needs to prepare to being killed."

"So what are you losing sleep over?"

"It's the fact that it wasn't at a last resort I could have hid or maybe run I didn't have to kill anyone and yet I did."

"So what do you need me to tell you I love you or to say it's all going to be ok?" Ferdinand exasperated.

"Of course not there is no such thing in this world those are just empty promises" Dante said with melancholy.

"Then what do you want me to do?"

"Make it so I can trust you and not making me think I have enemies behind me and in front of me." Dante said his voice rising.

"Why can't you trust me?"

"That is because I have killed two people two fucking people! Anyone could tell that someone is scheming behind my back so how can I trust anyone?" Dante said as he left the room leaving his coffee on the side with a conflicted Ferdinand who sighed.
