Chapter 28: Here is the finished product.

Just before sunset.

Thomas and I walked a little fast through the forest, gathering the herbs we wanted.

We also gathered some useful plants, flowers and roots.

“I hope this is enough.”

“Hmm, are we done?”

“Yes, I have everything I need. We’ll get some more at the lab.”

As we talk, I pack the last of the herbs into my bag.

As I close it and click the button, Thomas gives me a stern look.

“Hey Amelia, about that herb garden you were talking about. I don’t think it’s going to be easy for us anytime soon, you know?”

“I’m not thinking about that right now. We still have a lot of work to do.

“No, I don’t mean that, I mean the environment. You know we have a volatile climate here. It’s hard to grow crops consistently.”

“Oh, don’t worry about that. I’m already thinking about it.”

I’m not stupid either.

I have experienced the harshness of the environment and know how hard it is to grow plants and crops.

The herbs I gathered in the forest probably grew just for luck.

The fact that there are so few of them is proof of that.

“Have you ever heard of the growth accelerator? It’s a potion that rapidly accelerates the growth of plants.”

“I didn’t know there was such a thing. I’ve never heard of it before.”

“Yes? It’s common… Ah, I see. You don’t have a chance to see it? The Accelerator is useful, but it tastes terrible on crops.”

“If It tastes bad. Then we can’t use it for vegetables.”

Thomas is right.

Growth accelerators were first developed to make plants grow quickly and then die.

Later, when herbicides were developed, they were not used.

I don’t know for sure because that was about fifty years ago.

Of course, I know how to make it.

“As soon as I get home, I’ll make some if you’re interested.”

“Sure. I’m interested, but don’t you want to rest when you get home?”

“Uh…”

It’s my normal time when I get home, by the way.

My new workplace is a great environment where I don’t have to force myself to work at the end of the day.

◇◇◇

The next day.

Because of the heat and sleep problems, I woke up early and decided to start working a little earlier than usual.

The materials we collected yesterday are stored in the warehouse.

The warehouse is underground, so it is a little cooler than above ground.

I got the materials I needed from the warehouse and took them to the lab on the way.

“Amelia.”

“Thomas, good morning.”

“Good morning. You’re starting work already? You haven’t even had breakfast yet.

“I’m just moving stuff around. Don’t worry, I’ll eat breakfast.”

Thomas had it written all over his face that I should eat properly before work.

Sometimes I think Thomas is a little more expressive than I thought.

I also think he’s a little overprotective when he worries.

“What is Thomas doing so early in the morning?”

“I’m just doing my patrol.”

“Patrol?”

“Yeah. I was just checking to see if anyone who loves their job was working too hard this morning.”

That’s me you’re talking about, isn’t it?

His face is obviously smiling.

“You’re just saying.”

“I’m not making any of this up, okay? I’m an early riser by nature. I was just curious about yesterday. You know, the growth accelerator.”

“Yeah, do you want me to do it now?”

“After breakfast.”

“Yes…”

It’s very comprehensive.

It’s not like he’s harassing me or anything, it’s just pure kindness and I’m happy for him.

Mostly because I feel like it’s okay to indulge him.

After breakfast, we went to the lab together.

We have a planter, soil and herbs that we prepared yesterday.

We will not use the herbs as they are.

“I’m going to turn them into seeds now.”

“I understand?”

“Pay close attention …”

I draw an alchemy circle on a piece of paper and put the herbs on it.

I activate the alchemy.

Immediately after the herbs are wrapped in light, they turn into black, round seeds.

“Yes, it’s ready!”

“Uh. Can I ask you a question?”

“What?”

“How did you do that? Is it really that easy to make a seed?”

Well, that’s a good question!

I wanted to say something like that, but I was too embarrassed.

I cleared my throat and answered normally.

“Ehem. I changed the composition of the herb through alchemy. If you understand the ingredients and all that, you can change the form and condition. Even plants that don’t grow from seeds can be changed into seeds, you know.”

“I didn’t know alchemy could do that. The more I hear about it, the more versatile it seems.”

“Magic is more versatile. But it’s the best when it comes to transforming things. You have to learn a lot to do that.”

“So hard work is the key. I understand that.”

“I didn’t mean to imply that I work hard.”

“I know.”

Thomas says, laughing.

I’d be embarrassed if you unintentionally took it that way.

It’s like I’m trying to get a compliment… Maybe a little bit.

“So, let’s see what you’ve got.”

“Yeah, the growth accelerator, I found all the ingredients the last time I looked in the warehouse.”

“That’s why you were so confident from the beginning.”

“Yes. And the growth accelerator…”

I rummage.

I pull a bottle from the crowded shelves.

Inside is a yellow liquid.

“Here’s the finished product.”

“…You have it?”

“Yes. I made one the other day and forgot about it.”

“You don’t usually forget…”

It’s easy to forget, isn’t it?

I made it just for fun.
