Chapter 15: On second thought

“A new wall? You mean you want to make a material for a wall?”

Thomas asks, tilting his head at my words.

He continues.

“It’s great that you can make a strong material, but if it has to be rebuilt, that’s a big job.

“No, it doesn’t need to be rebuilt.”

“Really? But the wall …”

“Well, maybe I’m confusing you with a wall. It’s like paint on the surface of a wall.”

The material is initially liquid and solidifies after a short time in contact with air.

Its hardness is comparable to steel and its durability is high.

“Is there such a thing? I didn’t even know that.”

“It’s actually useful in many places, you know. For weapons and armor, for example. Even leather armor can become almost as hard as steel by coating the surface. Of course, it’s not as good as real iron armor.”

“Really? Isn’t something like that sold on the market? I’ve never seen anything like it.”

“You won’t find it in the market. There is no way to make them except through Alchemy.”

One of our jobs as Alchemists is to develop new substances.

By combining materials found in nature, we create entirely new substances.

This includes developing technologies to produce the developed substances by non-chemical means.

Alchemists are valuable.

There are not enough of us to mass produce something that only we can make.

However, there are many things that are virtually impossible to produce.

The thing I mentioned is one of them.

“And even if it’s not, it’s very difficult to manufacture. Even in the Capital, there weren’t many people who wanted to make it because it would be a waste of materials.”

“Difficult? Does that mean it will fail?”

“Sometimes you can fail. But even if you don’t fail, you will waste material.”

“What do you mean?”

“Basically, Alchemy cannot make more than the mass of material it is based on.”

However, the perfect use of all materials depends on the skills of the Alchemist.

The knowledge of the matter, the information about the substance to be made, the precision and the skill of the Alchemist.

A good Alchemist can consume all the materials without wasting them, and can make ten things by consuming ten.

But those who don’t can only make 8 or 7 by consuming 10.

A poor Alchemist can only use half of them.

The other half that cannot be used disappears during the Alchemy process.

I taught Thomas the basics of Alchemy.

“I didn’t know there was such a rule. The same thing can be done differently by different practitioners… I see. And Amelia can do it without any problems, right?”

“Well, yes. I wouldn’t suggest it if I couldn’t.”

“Right. I’m sorry I asked you a strange question.”

“Hmm?”

It’s kind of a leading question.

He’s not making fun of me, is he?

I wonder why he’s smiling.

“Is that okay?”

“If you’re asking if it’s okay to build it, then of course it’s okay. If it improves people’s lives, I will cooperate fully as a ruler. To tell the truth, there are many malfunctions of the Magic Tools. It costs us a lot of money to repair and replace them.”

“Magic tools are fragile, you know.”

“Yes, yes. Especially when they’re cheap… Anyway, I’ll leave it up to you to take care of it. But …”

Thomas stood up and walked to the window of the room.

I followed him.

“If it’s like this outside, there’s nothing we can do.”

“Yes, I think so.”

Outside it is still very stormy.

The wind seems stronger than before, and I’m worried not only about Mr. Shun but also about the people.

“How long do these storms usually last?”

“If it’s quick, it will be over soon. If it takes longer… It’s been about a week.”

“A week…”

Isn’t a week just hell with this storm?

We can’t even go outside, we have to stay in our rooms and worry.

Will we have enough to eat?

It makes me even more anxious and I can’t take it anymore.

“Thomas, can I go into the storage room now and check? I want to see what materials are there and what is missing. I’ll take care of the room myself on my own time.”

“If that’s okay with you, that’s fine. Let me know if there’s anything I can do.”

“Yes! I will probably have to ask you to help me get the materials because I can’t do it on my own. I’ll let you know as soon as I have confirmation.”

“Okay. I’ll see you later.”

So after I left Thomas, I went to the storage room by myself.

I had already been there yesterday and had gotten used to the darkness.

I walk down the stairs to the storage room, unlock the door, and go inside.

It is much darker in the storage room and the only light is a lantern in my hands.

With the small lantern in my hand, I check the materials in the warehouse.

“I think these are medicinal herbs. Minerals in the back? Maybe over there.”

What I’m making this time is not a potion.

It looks like a liquid, but it’s actually a mineral.

It’s called a “Layer Coating.”

It’s a liquid metal that can only be made through Alchemy.
