Chapter 75 - Betrayal

Lilith lived in an apartment building at the west corner of the city. It was a tranquil place. There was a park at one side and on the other side was a large plaza with various shops. Most of the shops were selling different types of food and beverages. It was evening by that time and I saw a lot of people gathering around that plaza as I drove by.

I parked my car nearby and walked out along with Athena. Being the daughter of the person who dealt with security of homes and other companies, I could say that the arrangements there were quite good. There were plenty of security device and routine patrol of guards.

But even that much security could not do anything about an angel's abilities. Athena was unable to provide her ID card to those security guards and thus she did what my Black does in such situation. She used her memory control or distortion ability in those poor security guards and quietly walked upstairs. I shrugged thinking how easy it is for an angel to deceive a human. I never had such thought when my Black showed me his ability.

I pressed the doorbell but it didn't seem to be working. I knocked the door and at the same time I heard a loud sound. It was a very familiar sound to me. Black had made similar sound a couple of times when he crashed into my room while returning from his adventures in the sky.

I shook my head with a bitter smile. How could my Black appear here. Lilith must have tripped over and fell on the ground. I was about to knock again and ask if she was alright but Athena held my hand and stopped me. She touched her lips with her finger, gesturing me to not speak anything. I was puzzled upon her actions but seeing that worried expression on her face, I did as she asked me to.

Athena quickly called someone and talked in a whispering manner. Unintentionally hearing her, I realized that she had called Raziel and asked for the password for entering Lilith's apartment. I didn't think they Raziel would have such personal information but to my surprise, he had it.

Athena entered that four digit password and slowly opened the door so that it wouldn't make any sound. I followed her. My shoes were making squeaky noise and Athena wanted me to stay quiet. So, I quickly took off my shoes as soon as I entered.

The apartment was dimly lit but that much light was enough for moving around without stumbling on anything. As my eyes wandered, I saw light coming out from the slightly open door of one of the rooms. Faint sound of two people talking in a low voice was coming from that direction. Athena walked towards that room in a fast pace but somehow, she didn't make even a little of noise. I followed her.

Athena stopped in front of the door and peeked inside. A surprised expression flashed past her face which was soon replaced by a neutral one.

Curious about what was inside, I overtook her and tried to peek inside.

I saw a man and a woman hugging each other so intimately... I couldn't exclaim in surprise when I saw that unexpected scene. At that moment, I felt like I was stuck by lightening which rendered me immobile. I refused to believe what I saw was truth.

That woman's face was buried in the c.h.e.s.t of that man but because of her long crimson hair, I could tell that she was Lilith. And that man... That man was my Black.

His long black coat was torn and worn from various places. The coat was stained in blood and those bruises on his face were telling about the brutal fights he had went through. His hair was messed up and I didn't see those bangs. His eyes were closed as he enclosed Lilith within his arms so tightly, as if he wanted to swallow her whole.

"How many times are you going to ask?" Black spoke in a cold but weary voice.

"I... It's just..."

"You speak a lot."

I watched in horror and disgust as Black embraced a woman other than me in his arms so closely. I first felt jealous, betrayed, angry, helpless and finally... Broken. That pain was unbearable. The insides of my stomach churned and I could barely hold myself back from decorating the floor with the food I had in the lunch.

No wonder he ain't back yet! No wonder he didn't try to contact me all this time! No wonder he didn't answer my summons! He had already moved on. I agree, the words I spoke on that night were harsh but how much more cruel was he to leave me like that. I suffered in pain for months while he enjoyed his life with his mistress, Lilith.

Was it necessary to crush my dignity like that? He forgot me so easily... And I couldn't even forget a fragment of the second I spent with him.

I wanted to leave. Leave them alone and run away. Far, far away... But I wanted to see him for a while longer. Perhaps that was the last time I would ever be able to bring myself to see the person I so loved. I wanted that moment to last a little longer.

After a few short moments, my powerless legs couldn't carry the burden of my weight and I collapsed on the floor. The sound of my knees hitting the ground alerted the two angels.

"Who is it?" Black spoke in a cold voice while looking at my direction and the door opened on its own.

"Never imagined I'd see an a.d.u.l.terous angel."

"An peeping tom who only knows how to taunt with lies. Quiet a spiteful tongue," Black spoke and I could see blood oozing out of his lower lip. I was on the floor and all he had to do was lower his eyes to look at me, he didn't do it. As if he didn't even care that I was present there.

"A corrupt soul. Expect nothing else from someone like you."

"So weak." Black gave Athena a mocking smile. He looked at her with pure disdain in his eyes.

"I'm not afraid of you." It was like she was trying to affirm her beliefs by saying that. Out of nowhere, a circular bronze shield in her left hand and and a sword with golden hilt in her right hand appeared. She was ready to fight my Black right there.

"Come and try." Black still didn't let go of Lilith and looked at Athena with a gaze so fierce that she was forced to retreat back a step.

"Sigh. Perhaps I am weak. But do you not care for your wife?" Athena said that and changed her grip on the sword such that the blade was pointed right at my neck while she still faced forward.

"I dare you." Black really didn't care about me at all... I was hurt once again. But even then, Athena didn't harm me. She shook her head and pointed the sword downwards.

"Why do you seek pandora's box?"

"Why did you retreated when you could have killed those demons?"

"Leave!"

"Even though darkness clouds your mind, your sanity still remains. Anger. Pain. Rage. Madness. Sadness. And I can see a little affection too. But why you behave like someone possessed. I seek some answers."

"I said leave!" Black shouted loudly and the sword and shield in Athena's hands disappeared. His deafening voice made me cover up my ears. Even the floor vibrated as if an earthquake had passed by and I was hell sure that everyone in the building must have become deaf for a couple of seconds. I saw blood coming out of Lilith's ears and she trembled. I heard a faint cry coming out of her mouth but she soon suppressed it and gulped down empty air. Black too noticed her condition.

"So troublesome."

Black blew air in Lilith's ears and I saw her ears faintly glowing as he healed her.

"Just leave," Black spoke to Athena once more.

Athena first glanced at me and then back to Black. "There is no salvation left for you. I pity you," Athena said and walked out of the room. And Black's gaze finally fell upon me.

"And you..."

"Never expected you to be here." Black spoke and there was not even a trace of guilt in his voice. He rocked both of them left and right lightly as he hugged Lilith.

"I loved you!" I shouted loudly. His actions were making me so angry.

"Me too! But you... You pushed me away."

"And I'm sorry for that! I'm truly sorry. I really didn't mean it. I promise."

He,then, buried his head in Lilith's neck as if he was smelling her fragrance.

"You didn't love me the way I loved you." He pouted and complained.

The way he looked at me, was different from before. His eyes used to shine every time they looked at me. Every time I saw his eyes, I would feel how much he cherished me. But now his eyes had lost all their light. He,who used to be as pure as a baby, grinned at me like I was a fool. His words which were always so sweet felt like they were thorns.

That wasn't my Black! That was someone else masquerading as my Black.

Black kissed Lilith's cheek and then he pulled her face towards him while coming a bit forward himself. Their faces came closer and I knew he was going to kiss her. For some unknown reason, tears started falling out of Lilith's eyes.

And even then Black kept looking at me from the corner of his eyes. His sharp gaze pierced my heart.

"Please don't do this to me. Stop it!" But he didn't listen to my words. He continued moving, slowly. As if he wanted it to hurt me. As if he wanted me to get hurt because of his actions. A few tears escaped the corner of Lilith's eyes.

"You're such a jerk."

I agreed that it was my mistake to call him like that. I agreed that I was at fault. But this was not the kind of punishment I deserved.

I turned back and ran away before their lips could meet.
