A Dragons Favor

We rode the horses quietly down the dirt road, soon we would be back home and then our plan would be in motion. The next 24 hours were crucial, the plan was simple. She would convince her father to show her where he kept the egg under pretences that they needed to control the dragon population. I would be getting supplies ready for our secret journey, no one must find out about our plan. If any word got to the king all would be ruined. We would flee the kingdom under the cloak of darkness, I urged her to write a letter to her mother to assure her that she was safe but not to reveal our plans. The princess was being very compliant, maybe I had her wrong from the start. Our horses made their way over a grassy hill and the palace came into view, giving a shakey sigh Flora led the way. I think it was possible that she was more nervous than I was.

After putting the horses away in their stables we made our way slowly into the throne room.

"Flora!!" The queen screamed as she leapt from her seat and flung her arms around Flora, sobbing.

The king scowled at me, it was clear he was hoping I would fail.

"Ellie, thank you for bringing her home, you must be tired you may rest the remainder of the day. "

"Thank you your highness" I curtsied and quietly left the room.

Little did she know I had too much work to rest, I felt bad for deceiving the queen but we had to do this. I made my way to the servants bathing room, the least I was going to do was take a bath I smelled like the stables on a hot July day. The word of Floras return spread fast, I could hear the palace gossips whispering away as I soaked in the hot water. I tried to tune them out as I cleaned myself, the dragon had left smoke stains all over my body. I still couldn't believe this was all happening, I closed my eyes remembering all the events that have happened. With a heavy sigh I pulled myself from the stone tub and dried off, if we had any luck we would be escaping in a mere few hours and I had plenty to do.

I rushed to my room and started stashing the necessities away. Hairbrush, clothes, my warm tunic, and finally the locket my mother gave me before she died. Stashing the bundle in a chest at the foot of my bed I snuck off to Floras room to pack her things as well. I decided to take the hidden servants corridor to avoid anyone that may question what I was doing, as I was about to open the hidden doorway to her room I heard her talking with someone.

"..Daddy, is it true that if a human possesses a dragon egg they can hold power over the dragons?"

"Why, yes angel. But only a special egg."

"Special egg? Aren't they all the same?"

"Hehehe, no sweetheart they're not. Regular eggs are useless but every once in a while a special egg is laid and if you take that you have all the power."

"Wow! I wish we could find an egg like and make the dragons pay for taking me!"

"You really want to make them pay?"

"Of course! They stole me away during a very important time and stained my beautiful dress!"

"Come with me darling, I want to show you something. "

"Hmm? Ok daddy. "

I prayed he was showing her to the egg, we both knew he had it, maybe this plan would work. After hearing her door shut I cautiously looked into her room, seeing no one I walked in and grabbed a bag she would only need the bare essentials. Stuffing what she needed into the bag I hid it in the hole in the wall under her bed then left through the secret door again.

After gathering the needed supplies from the kitchen I sat in my room trying to ease my mind, I was so anxious to get this under way.

A knock came at my door, as I opened it the princess rushed inside.

"I know how to get the egg!"
